Trying to figure out where I stand in regards to finding a decent academic program.

So I'm an average student when it comes to grades. 230s step 1, passes on clerkships. I'm sort of a non trad in that I spent 4 years in the military and worked in mental health after my degree. I also have a family which is why my grades are average (I chose not to study as much as needed).

With that said, I also have 4 publications this year and a few more on the way (up to 10 in a surgical sub specialty).

I'm interested in going to a solid academic Rad program (I'm at a Midwest state school). I know that I'm not MIR, NW, U of C, material, but what type of academic programs do I have a decent shot at?

Any advice would be appreciated

You have a decent shot at a good academic program. MIR, Michigan, and Mayo are probably out of reach, but you have the advantage of wanting to stay in a region that is not very popular for people from other parts of the country. You'd have a chance at places like U wisc, Cleveland clinic, upmc, etc. Apply to as many academic places as possible and try to get a 250+ step II.

Thanks for the response. what do you think about programs like SLU, Loyola, UIC, Rush, Peoria?

Not very familiar with those programs, unfortunately. I'll defer to others about those.

Vet status is awesome. Thanks man and good luck!
I concur with above and encourage you to look at UPMC and CCF.

I would still apply to NW, MIR and UC.

would agree with posters above. I would also take a look at solid programs like Minnesota, Iowa, MCW, Ohio State. Places that look more for fit and less at numbers include Wisco, Indiana, UChicago, Loyola, Ohio State, and Minnesota.

Thank you all for the responses, I really appreciate it.

I interviewed at University of Chicago last app cycle with sub 230 step 1 and similar grades (and no pubs). You should definitely apply there.

On the flip side I was rejected by Rush and only offered an interview at Loyola off the waitlist. Just shows you the randomness about the app process. Might as well apply and see what happens.
