ACFAS Student Chapter

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I accidentally missed the deadline for FPMSA elections (Barry pod school main officers), but that might have been a blessing in disguise because getting one of those positions would have precluded me from being a club officer. I'll be running for ACFAS officer position later this month. I don't really care if I'm prez, VP, etc... I just want to make the club active.

The chapter here has been relatively inactive, but Dr. Hatch visited our school recently, and I'd really like to get together with some of the students who I feel are the other top minds in my class and re-energize the club at Barry. That funding which the parent ACFAS provides can really help. Here's some ideas I had (I'm sure some are far from novel lol):

-suture workshop
-hand tie workshop
-scrubbing / sterile field workshop
-"Radiology in surgical planning" speaker
-"Antibiotics and Microbiology for the OR" speaker
-surgical journal review sessions
-instrument workshops (teach students name and function of OR and minor sx tools)

Those were just a few ideas I had. There's a ton of DPMs in Miami and most of the faculty ones as well as local residents and fellows should hopefully help out.

If you do become the chapter president, let me know. We still would like to work on creating a more universal club. We have a ton of different events and speakers each year and maybe able to help you guys out. Our club is the largest at DMU and has a very nice size budget. Let me know how things turn out and we can talk.

Those are some good ideas for the club. I wish you good luck with your club elections. Here are some of the activities that we did at TUSPM when I was the VP of the ACFAS Student Chapter:

- Monthly lecture from a surgical DPM (either locally or some more prominent DPMs in our field)
- Suturing / Hand tying workshops (we got Ethicon to donate the hand tying kits)
- Arrange for the third year students (and some second year students if they already had the OR protocol workshop) to begin to observe foot and ankle surgical cases (once in a blue moon scrub into surgical cases if permitted) in the local area hospitals where there are surgical residency programs. We did this from Feb - May, when the residency programs did not have many externs. It was a success and had gotten a lot of positive feedback from students. It was a lot of work for the Surgery club officers to coordinate this.
- Casting and splinting workshop for the first and second year students

That is all I can think of for now. As I think of other things, I will let you know.

I agree with a more universal club between all of the schools. It is great to see that clubs between the schools would share resources.

I think that a great idea would be to get a national sponsor (i.e. BioPro, Smith and Nephews, ect) and have a national speaker series. We can get various speakers to lecture at the colleges and hold various surgical labs. Plus, we have the coolest t-shirts design that we give out with our membership.

One thing that may shock other schools is we do a lifetime membership not a yearly membership and charge over $100 bucks to join. This adds about $4000 to 5000 to our account each year. Then with various sponsors, donations and reps we end up with a budget of about $7000 to $10,000 a year. Being this active is has given us back to back Club of the Year at CPMS.

It seems like you guys are doing a good job with the ACFAS club at DMU.

We were lucky enough to get a great group of officers. I really think that is the key. Since I was the president, we've been lucky enough to add two clubs and two more faculty advisors.

That sounds like a very good idea; I would be fully in support of sharing ideas and fostering good relations between any and all of the student ACFAS chapters. I am glad that so many dedicated students are willing to spend their personal time developing podiatric surgical knowledge and skills.

I have signed up to announce my candidacy for Barry's Surgery Club president position. I am very glad that many of the top students in my '09 class have joined me in signing up for other officer positions with the club. At this point, we are all running unopposed, but that may change. I will definitely let everyone know the results of our club elections which will take place next week.

Thank you for your ideas and support. It is great to have suggestions from individuals who have successfully manned the ACFAS club position which I will hopefully be serving during the 07-08 academic year.

The DMU elections are being held today, so I will announce the new officers tonight and try to get them on board.

2007-08 Barry Surgery Club (student chapter of ACFAS) officers:

President: Seth Felice '09
VP: William Thetford '09
Historian: Amy Riedel '09
Parliamentarian: Joseph Dickinson '09
Secretary Liliana Heath '09
Treasurer: Al Adams '09
Faculty Advisor: Jacqueline Buchman, DPM

...I'd love to add a club liaison for the Barry 2010 class and maybe even one in the 2011 class when they arrive also. That might be a good way to promote the club events and draw interest. I guess we'll discuss those and other issues when we have our first club meeting. My tentative goal is an officer meeting in May after we finish final exams and then our first club presentation or workshop to take place sometime in July after NBPME pt1. I'm excited and feel we have a quality group of officers who can make the club something special during this upcoming year...

Congrats Feli. I am assuming you are the new president for the club since I don't know your real name. 🙂

Here at Barry, we had our first event, and instrument workshop, in late June. I prepared and gave a PowerPoint presentation explaining the history, classifications, and functions of common pod sx instruments. That was followed by a local 3rd year resident, Dr. Nguyen, demonstrating proper handling and providing insight on the various instruments. Mercy Hospital PMS-36 residency director, Barry professor, and PI faculty member Dr. Thomas Merrill was nice enough to moderate the event for us. We had a pod sx tray set up for students to check out; an instrument handout, snacks, and refreshements were provided for attendees.

With boards coming up and 3rd years having an IntMed test later that evening, attendance wasn't stellar, but it was a fun event that should put some students ahead of the game when they enter the OR and clinics. Besides, making up the PPT file for the event helped me get a couple sterilization questions on the board exam correct that I might have otherwise missed 😀

Which one the Biopro?

Yes, the scholarship sponsored by Biopro. Here is the posting:

Thanks, guys. Are either of you attending the scientific meeting this year?

It should be fun time, and the schedule looks to feature many interesting topics. Long Beach will be great this time of year (it's been getting downright chilly in Miami lately... mid to low 70s)

I don't have the time nor the money. I was able to attend last year b/c of the Biopro scholarship.

I will not be going to the Scientific meeting this year. My boss does not want me to take too much time off from work for all of these conferences. I already went to the APMA meeting in PHiladelphia. In a few weeks, I will be attending a Stryker course in Florida. Perhaps, I might go next year when the ACFAS Scientific meeting is back in the East Coast. I used to go every year when I was a resident. Enjoy the meeting. Remember, it is also your opportunity to network as well as a student at those meetings.

We've had a great year with DMU's SCACFAS club. Kylin and all the officers did a phenomenal job. I was appointed first year liaison and was able to help out in alot of the events.

From what I remember here's some of the things we did:

Operation Tournament for Toys for Tots (raised over $475 and 30+ toys)
Discover DMU Day (twice this year, hosted a suturing and tying hands-on demonstration for interested students. Was able to convince several people to go shadow a DPM 🙂)
Multiple suturing sessions
Also we have a speaker about every month, like last month we had Dr. Lawrence Lavery (+ a demonstration on Dermagraft)
