I've wondered the same thing but have to assume it is competitive since there are so few programs in the country and each only takes 1-2 fellows/year
 
I don't think it is that competitive, as there are a lot of people who are sick of all the training and would like to work. So not that many people are going for advanced fellowships, at least at this movement!
 
My opinion is that it is somewhat competitive, but not as much so as getting a GI spot itself. It's not a sure thing for one to match in GI, even occasionally for those from top IM programs. OTOH, you should be able to get an advanced endoscopy spot SOMEWHERE in the country if you are willing to move. A spot at Hopkins or Partners remains very selective, of course.

One thing for sure, advanced endoscopy is definitely more competitive than hepatology.
 
another question is are all advance endoscopy fellowships accredited? because I've heard about some programs who will offer you "additional" training in endoscopy but it's unaccredited.....is there a board for advance endoscopy?

At this time there is no such thing as accreditation for advanced endoscopy programs. I've never heard of there being a board certification for it, either. AFAIK, you simply need to meet a certain number of ERCPs and EUSs. Still, this is getting harder and harder to come by over the course of a general GI fellowship. Even if you manage to get the numbers, it still will not be enough in most cases if you wish to land an academic job in this. Plus, there is more to advanced endoscopy than ERCPs and EUSs. Many of the newer endoscopic techniques and equipments are tested and performed by this group of endoscopists. Going to a dedicated advanced endoscopy program would more likely give you exposure to these in large enough volumes.
 
What does it add to the practice of a GI specialist ,in a private and academic setting, in terms of exposure, hours, lifestyle and salary?


Is there a list of the Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy fellowships in the country?
