Hello all,

Has anyone ever heard of a student being accepted into a (DO or MD) program, paid their deposits, and still decided to reapply to MD/DO school (at the same time) for the following cycle prior to official matriculation? Does anyone anticipate problems arising from such an action?

So here is my dilemma:

I applied to MD schools 2 years ago and I received letters stating that I may receive an invitation to interview (basically "put on hold"). Well May/April of that year came around and I was denied last minute.

I reapplied to DO schools last year and I was accepted into a pretty good DO school that's a bit further from home than I would like (its cheaper/easier to live at home). Anyway, I have paid my deposit for the DO school and I have begun the pre-matriculation process but I am still not at ease.

I like the school and all but I really want to try to re-apply to the MD (and DO) schools in my area to see if I can get in. My GPA is 3.74 and MCATs are: 25, 27, & 26 (meh - low VR score). I have taken two years off since finishing undergrad and I have worked in the medical device industry where I have some pretty unique experiences that can go in my new application. From previous applications I have 100+ hours of MD shadowing and 150+ hours of hospital volunteering along with additional volunteering programs here and there. 3 years of orgo research experience from my college years too. I have not done research, volunteering or shadowing since finishing college.

I dont have a good reason to defer for a year and I dont want to loose my spot in the DO school. So I was thinking: what if I began DO school in Fall of 2013 as anyone would but reapply for the Fall of 2014 class elsewhere? If I get in somewhere then I simply leave the DO school for the other school and "restart" my first year of medical school again. I mean, I know the DO school wouldn't be happy about someone taking this route but I don't see there being a problem if I were to leave and/or stay if I didn't get in anywhere as my deposits are paid.

My pre-health counselor advises against this move - says that it won't end well. What do you think?

Thanks for your input,
B

DO NOT DO THIS. Take your acceptance and be happy with it. You will have a HUGE problem and you could easily be "red flagged" and not ever be allowed to matriculate anywhere. There is NOTHING that would prevent school number 2 to expel you for unethical behavior and then you would have no degree period. If you start medical school and then leave that leaves a spot unfilled for 4 years so that school loses money in the process and you took that spot away from someone else who really wants to be there.

Need to rethink your intentions here because you are only setting yourself up for a lifetime of misery. THEY ALL TALK TO EACHOTHER.

Plus, just because you would get to stay home for medical school doesn't not mean you would stay home for residency. Just as well get used to the idea that you will be mobile for the next 4-9 years and then likely will move again for the first job out of residency.

YES to this. Very unethical to start med school anywhere and not intend to finish. Plus, with your MCAT score there is no telling if you would ever get in somewhere else. Don't get cold feet, buddy. Go to med school and be happy! Besides, it's one more year of attending income if you start sooner.

I was in a similar position. But really if cost saving by being home is the reason it's really not worth it. You'll have $200K loans regardless. If you are simply not ready for the transition, then it's worth considering. You only get to start med school once. It's rough and you want to be ready.

THEY ALL TALK TO EACHOTHER.

On what level could admissions committees talk to each other? Some schools get 10,000 apps, I don't see a reasonable way to do it unless they write something through AMCAS which doesn't really seem feasible.

Figuratively speaking. To be accepted into medical school and start classes then to turn around and reapply MD while going DO. In the age of electronic applications and LOR's would you risk your career on being found out doing this? Because it will be red flagged and the OP will get caught and his career will be over. Just be happy with an acceptance and don't try to 'play' the system thinking there aren't practices in place to prevent double dipping.

Hmm the dilemma is not whether I want to go to med school (transition or live away from home - I've done it before)... that's a no brainer - It's just whether that school/city is where I want to be ( I wont be miserable there but its just a matter of preference). The cost and all that stuff are just factors. Anyway looks like you are all saying the same thing. I am just going with it (as I don't have a reason to defer)!

Thanks all.

Best of luck to you all.
