Anosmia anyone?

Hi! I have a friend who is a PGY-2 in path who lost his sense of smell. He had printed up a bunch of articles about formalin and anosmia. I know he thought it was due to formalin exposure. I don't know if it comes back or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you never have a sense of smell with Kallman's syndrome, thus you can't lose it.

I have never heard of losing your sense of smell from path chemicals.

Well, if you can still smell the formalin, you haven't lost your sense of smell. I do hate the smell of formalin though...it's very caustic stuff.
 
Yes, Kallman's is lifelong anosmia . Failure of olfactory nn to migrate or something; had a woman with amenorrhea with that dx.
But most common reasons to have anosmia are:
badass chronic sinusitis (R/0 with neg sinus CT)
or
MVA, shears off the olf neurons at cribiform plate; I did a depostion for a pt with this complication; I always wondered if they were actually compensated in any way for that. I suppose if you really love the smell of coffee, pizza, or napalm in the morning.
