2 questions:

1. If there are fewer jobs in Cali, should a person avoid doing their residency there if they want to do private practice? It's been said many times on this board that you get jobs through the people you know at your own program or from local groups that are hiring. It would seem that you should do your residency where the jobs are.

2. UC-Davis. Noone talks about this program. Is there a reason for that? Is it as good as UCSD?

It is probably not be that there are fewer jobs in Cali per se, but more that there is a lot of competition for those jobs available -- especially when you take into account the number of pathologists living in the area currently along with the number of pathologists who would like to move there from out of state.

My impression about UCD is that it's not a big name, is a smaller program, and tends to have a larger proportion of foreign grads. I think most would agree it does not have the recognition that UCSD does. I'll be interviewing at UCD later this month and will post my thoughts on the place, as I too have not been able to find out much in the way of specifics.
