Will doing a radiology residency outside of california make it difficult for me to find a job in california after residency? I go to med school in california but I realize how competitive it will be to stay for residency. However all of my family is in california so I would like to know how difficult it will be to come back home after residency in a different state. Thanks so much.

If you go to a big-name program for residency, then (I hear) it is easy to land a job on the west coast. If you go to a small-time residency program, then it will probably be harder. Most of the connections you get from residency will be from the surrounding area. But if you go to Johns Hopkins, well everybody has heard about that program & knows it's good.

From my understanding, a newly grad board-certified doctor should have little trouble landing a job.

Do you want to work in a big city in california or somewhere more remote? This can make a big difference.

I'd be happy to have a job anywhere in california really, so at least on days off it wouldn't be too difficult to visit the parents and other relatives 😳)

The standard advice on AuntMinnie right now is to go for the program near where you want to live rather than the big name, unless you want to go into academia. Connects are apparently incredibly important in Rads. If you don't know where you want to live, the big name may again be preferable.

Even if you don't do residency in California, there is always the possibility of doing a fellowship in California, which would be a good way to get back into the state. I'm at a residency program in California, but I'm doing a fellowship outside of California, because I'm probably one of the rare few that is ready to leave California. heh heh
