canada vs US

anyone konw the differences between optometry in Canada vs US, in terms of scope of practice, legislations... etcetc?

It varies from state to state in the US and province to province in Canada. Look up the board of optometry for any states/provinces you are interested in and see what you can do.. The AOA website will probably be useful.. aoa.org I think.

Anyone know anything about practicing optometry in Canada? If someone gets a degree from a US school, how would he/she go about practicing in Canada?

Thanks

Correct me if i'm wrong anyone, but i think all you have to do is write the canadian national board exams, and then the licensing exam in the specific province in which you want to practice.
All US optometry schools are considered equivalent to the canadian schools, so no extra courses or anything are necessary, you just have to write the same exams that any canadian grad writes and you're good to go.

^ correct,

main difference is that all of canada is kickin in gear and allowing OD's to prescribe medicines, i think Ontario was one of the last provinces to finally give OD's the ability to write prescriptions.

i think Ontario was one of the last provinces to finally give OD's the ability to write prescriptions.

Even that is not fully put into practice yet. The legislation has passed but they are still working out the specifics, like what kind of CE is going to be needed before ODs are going to be qualified.
It's really sad that Ontario is so far behind the states and all of the other provinces in that respect... it must be so frusterating for ODs to be so restricted in their scope of practice. Good thing things are changing!! 🙂

what about in terms of specialties? I know at least in ontario, optometrists are not allowed to advertise as a specialist in an area for example "pediactrics" or "ocular disease"...

what about in the states?

what about demand?

is there a greater demand in Canada for optometrists? I know in my city there is a shortage..what about the country as a whole?
