Have you heard of any residents who took significant time off between medical school and residency or during residency, without doing anything to improve their residency application?

Meaning either a year of just travel, or working at a pharmaceutical company for a few years.

I would not include things like radiology research, or even a MPH on this list.

When did they do their intern year? Did it matter in terms of applying back?

I am thinking of taking some time off to try new things.
Curious to hear if anyone else has done the same.

We had a resident who raised 3 kids from delivery to teenager between PGY-3 and PGY-4.

Wow, that's kinda cool that the program would be that flexible for her (him?). But hella scary... medicine advances quickly on all fronts, but the technology improvements (and/or additions) in 15 years in radiology are break-neck. Or so it seems from the outside, at least. That would take quite some woman (man?) to cover lost ground and get back on track.

I suppose it would help if you kept up with current advances while on leave, which may have been the case.

Actually, she left one program and came to us 10 years later (when a PGY-4 slot opened up due to additional funding).

lol, yeah I guess I should have figured that. I'm having one of my many idiot days. 🙂

Anyone else with similar experiences?
