Hey everyone,

I want to get an early start on applying and I was wondering if it is better to get a committee letter than seperate letters of recommendation? I understand that a committee letter would look good going into an application but is it really necessary? If I have the time I'm going to do it anyway but I just want to make sure I have somthing to fall back on. Thanks for the help.

Hey Matt,

I never even considered getting a committee letter. Didn't hurt me in the least. I got interviews for all the schools I applied to and got accepted to all the schools I interviewed at. If you're asking if it's 100% necessary, then I'd say the answer is no. 🙂

Good luck!

Clemson University doesn't have a "committee." I got in to UAB and SCO without one.

Hi,

The university I attended also didn't have a committee. I think that SUNY required their applicants to get one from them if it was available...otherwise the applicant would have to obtain three other letters of rec from other sources. Since most schools don't require it, I think it's ok to get letters from professors ets.

Hey,

I did a committee letter just because it was easier then getting 3 different letters. I come from a small undergrad, the kind were everyone in the science department knows each other. It could be a lot harder in at a big University. - I would say which ever is easiest for you. and Good job on applying early!! I wish I would have done that!

There are many benefits to using a committee letters. I also work as a Student Assistant for the advisor that arranges the committee letters and this is how it works at my school. First, it is easier on the people you are asking letter of recs from, because they have only one form to fill out, instead of multiple ones (If you are applying to multiple schools). Second, the advisor that is arranging the committee letter goes over them, which ones she would put in (without breaking the confidentially of it). Therefore, theoretically you can get several recommendations and have only the best put into the committee letters. I had all mine sent off. Also, I have been told that some schools prefer the committee letters (But I do not believe it helps or hurt the applicants either way). Finally, the school usually keeps a copy of the letters, therefore if you do not get in the first time you apply, you can add new letter of recs to the committee letters.
