Competitive programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm also interested in how competitive the top 20 Peds programs are. Do they expect AOA, honors in Peds, or would an above average Peds grade with good rec letters and solid board score be enough? Thanks.

First of all...what are the top 20 programs. Very hard to tell. If you go to an academic program that has a broad range of exposure..it is a top program. Residancy is not like med school....it really is what you make of it no matter where you are. And fellowships are wide open for the most part so you really dont have to worry about being at a "top" program. A lot of people rank programs on their reputation as being a top school and are miserable for 3 years.
Having said that, form my experience..what schools look for is very different from school to school. I interviewed at a bunch of "top" programs and the old-school ones really do base it on Class rank, AOA, and board scores. There was also a good proportion that I felt really took letters and personality into consideration. Those are the schools to aim for. An example is UCSF. They are a top program but their PD does an awsome job, year in and year out of selecting classes that mesh well and work well together. It makes residency more enjoyable. Again, this is all my opinion from just finishing the interview trail.

This guy has no clue. Don’t listen to a thing he says. Just joking he is actually one of my best friends and he is a great person. He could go to any program out there, yet he still looks beyond the “rankings”. He has interviewed at all of the top programs and has some perspective about what is out there.
