What do the more competitive peds programs want in an applicant? How important are board scores?
pedshopeful said:First of all...what are the top 20 programs. Very hard to tell. If you go to an academic program that has a broad range of exposure..it is a top program. Residancy is not like med school....it really is what you make of it no matter where you are. And fellowships are wide open for the most part so you really dont have to worry about being at a "top" program. A lot of people rank programs on their reputation as being a top school and are miserable for 3 years.
Having said that, form my experience..what schools look for is very different from school to school. I interviewed at a bunch of "top" programs and the old-school ones really do base it on Class rank, AOA, and board scores. There was also a good proportion that I felt really took letters and personality into consideration. Those are the schools to aim for. An example is UCSF. They are a top program but their PD does an awsome job, year in and year out of selecting classes that mesh well and work well together. It makes residency more enjoyable. Again, this is all my opinion from just finishing the interview trail.
