Wow, all that grossing I was helping the resident with yesterday really paid off--I saw some awesome cases today!
1. Papillary ependymoma
2. GVH reaction in the liver
3. ectopic epididymis in a specimen from a 34 y/o female (very neat!)
4. sarcoid in a lung biopsy, not all that impressive but I'm just including it because I diagnosed it myself 😉
5. MAI in a case of candida esophagitis. It was actually pretty!

And then when I was on frozens the big one came...a 36 lb retroperitoneal mass complete with pieces of kidney, stomach, liver, colon, spleen, and pancreas. Very impressive! Unfortunately for the patient it turned out to be a myxoid liposarcoma, but it sure was a cool specimen.

Just wanted to share about my exciting 2nd day of my surgical path rotation! I hope I don't sound too dorky, but it was really fun 🙂

I always wonder what the surgeon tells the family and patient when they remove an opposite-sex organ or vestige from someone. I guess it's not funny but I can't help laughing.

That's a large retroperitoneal mass. The biggest specimens I have grossed have been abdominal panus in those who have had weight loss and need the excess skin removed - the one the other day was 45 pounds. I also got a polycystic kidney once that I think weighed about 18 kilos. :scared:
