EM? Well, I've given that a lot of thought lately. Although, I can't help but to think that a majority of EM is simply FP for scum bags and drug seakers. Again...the whole "employee" thing enters into the equation. Like many aspiring doctors, I envisioned a life of autonomy eventually. As far as I know, you can?t open up your own EM practice.

I'll speak to what I know, and leave the other specialties to their respective members. EM is partly primary care for those who don't have insurance (including scumbags), but there's a fair amount of real medicine and procedures involved as well.

As far as the business aspect, there's been a war a-brewing between the large corporate contract management groups and physician-owned groups. It's not clear which will be the dominant force in the future, but as of now, it's not that difficult to find work in physician-owned democratic groups if that's what you want. On a day to day basis, we're very autonomous. I work part-time for a contract management group, but my main jobs since I've gotten out of residency have both been partnership arrangements.

The money's decent, the lifestyle is good, the work is generally interesting. Good path if it fits your personality. Also, if you want to work in military hospitals, it pays to quit the military and sign on as a civilian physician contractor. The military tends to pay their civilian physician contractors a lot more, but you sacrifice the cushy benefits and pension of the military of course.

How "well" did you do during MSIII year? The reason I ask, is b/c surgical fields like urology, ent, ophtho, all seem to have a very high job satisfaction plus good lifestyles. Urology has a tough residency, but ENT and ophtho aren't bad.

You didn't mention gas or rads either. If you say "lifestyle," then these should be considerations.

Well, I guess thats what happens when you post when a little drunk. But still, that was on long post, why the big turnaround? Did you make your decision for which specialty to go into?
