I'm looking for advice from current DMU pods on any useful clubs to join in the fall. I'm interested in surg/sports med and I've read about SCACFAS, the Sports Med Club, and SOSA but I just want to know if any of these or others are actually worth the time. Thanks.

SCACFAS is a great club on campus with lots of activities. This club is one I would join for sure.

whoever has the best football team is who im joining 👍

This is a good idea at any pod school. ACFAS gives the student surgery clubs a nice healthy activity budget, and knowledge of surgery will never hurt you. One of the main focuses of residency is to teach surgery, so a lot of clerkship, interview, and later board exam questions are along the lines of anat, surgery, and related meds and labs. Student surgery club also will usually gives you chances to get involved with research and journal reading.

As a first year student, some of the info and activities the club provides will be over your head since you haven't completed lower extremity anat, but it's still interesting stuff that will keep you motivated to prepare yourself well for the upcoming clinical years.

DMU holds a "Club Day" in the fall during the first month of classes where everyone sets up a booth and you can go around and speak with the club officers. Some clubs are better than others, but my advice is pick a couple and then actually take part in the activities! Its a good way to get to know some of the older students and get more exposed to the field 😎

That sounds great! Do you recommend joining clubs as a 1st year, or is it best to focus on classes, and then join clubs second year? What other clubs does DMU have to offer?

I highly suggest it! It is easy to get lost in your books and not take advantage of other things going on around you. Being a part of one or more of the clubs allows you to get out and interact with the other students in a non classroom/lab setting. Below is a link to the web page describing the clubs. Some are podiatry specific, others are not, you just have to go through it and read about them. I am part of 3 clubs myself (SCACFAS, ACFAOM, PPMJC) and try to make it to as many events as I possibly can...plus when your loan money starts running a little low and there is free lunch anything sounds nice

I wouldn't worry about deciding which ones you want to be a part of now. Wait until club day and chat with the officers to see what they have planned for the year and then make your decisions. All in all, you'll be much more well-rounded and exposed to more if you take part rather than locking yourself away to study.

Just so you know, you're welcome to listen in on any of the guest lecturers that the clubs offer. You just can't eat the food if you didn't pay your membership.

As a first year, join one or two clubs, it'll be a great way to meet other pod folks too. Meetings are usually at lunch time, if that hasn't already been mentioned here, so it won't take too much of you time. Although by the end of your first year, there will be club elections that you might want to run for. Seems that if you want to run for any of the position, you want people to know who you are early on and the best way to do that is by showing your face often at club meetings.

I agree that it is a good idea to join two or three clubs. But don't overdo it. Save most of your time for studying.
