Hello, I'm an MS3 at a top 15 school aspiring to get into a radiology residency preferably in either California or Chicago, and I plan to apply to most of the programs in these two places.

I got a 250 on Step 1, do not plan on taking Step 2 til well into my MS4 year, did reasonably well in my first two years with one letter of distinction, taught mcat-prep classes on the side, and was leader of a student organization.
Unfortunately, though I plan on trying my best in my clinical rotations, I don't plan on honoring more than one or two of them. Furthermore, I haven't done any research in medschool and don't see myself conducting any serious research in the future.

So my main question is, what do you think are my chances of getting into a rads program in Cali or Chicago w/o doing any research? Are there ways of getting around research? Should I expand my applications to other regions in the country? And finally, should I not match in rads, is it easy to scramble into something completely different (i.e. Family practice, my 2nd choice)?

Thank you very much for your time in replying to this message.

sorry there, with a 250 from a top 15 school, you have no change of getting in.. even with research. try family medicine.

you "don't plan on honoring more than one or two" clinical rotations? I call that poor planning. your ms-3 year is the most important for getting into a good residency, in radiology or any other specialty.

I love it... This guy is sounding like he could honor his whole 3rd yr if he really wanted, but just doesn't feel like putting in the effort. It's not THAT easy, man. If people just read a few posts, they'd see this same type of stuff posted over and over and over again. Man, anybody with a 250+ has a good chance of matching, period. Hell, 240+ too.

Don't narrow yourself to just those two areas, broaden the range of locations to regions rather than a city or single state. I have heard of others with similar credentials matching to their alternate specialties. Namely because they thought they had it clinched. They are now intubating patients for surgeons....or ordering STAT CTs from the Emergency Room.

kuyajedi, you don't need to worry at all. Apply to one or two programs in Chicago and one or two in California and you'll be good to go. I wouldn't apply to more than 3 or 4 places though.

I dont know. A 250 is pretty low to try to get into family medicne. Maybe you should consider law school.
