Electives important to match derm?

Hi!

Is it important to do derm elective to land a derm residency if you research in derm + a great step 1 score?

Absolutely critical to do the derm elective. You have to get to know the derm faculty.

Ok. I will have to do it then. I was just afraid my app is already too good an elective could only do damage (like writing the step 2 CK before the match). Thanks for the advice.

I'd recommend at least 1. It's a glaring red flag to declare interest in dermatology despite having 0 clinical experience.

I think you need LORs from Dermatologists, who have worked with you in the clinic. Despite having a research background, I only had 1 letter from my adviser. The other 3 were from academic Dermatologists whom I worked with in the clinics (did 2 away rotations).
