Yep, the oral board isn't exactly a knowledge test. Yes, its true that one stem won't fail you, etc etc.

However, the stems that really gave me trouble are the ones that come out of the left field. E.g. I got a question over the mechanism of action for Acute Intermittent Porphyria or the drug of choice for treatment of SIADH. (Edit: while practicing with my partner on our own, this is not a stem i got from an actual oral board exam.)

These topics are technically fair game, but they are esoteric to say the least.

What are some of the other out of left field topics that came up for you during oral board studying?

EDIT: I was made aware that we cannot reveal actual stems from oral boards. My bad, this was not my intention. I was simply trying to use the great minds of SDN to broaden my knowledge. The discussion has now shifted to comprehensive lists of topics that one can use for oral board studying. Please do not actually reveal oral board stems in this thread. Simply broad stroke topic lists.

Revealing an actual topic (esoteric or not), especially if one is going provide specifics on what the examiners were going for probably violates ABA rules and SDN ToS. Just sayin....

Esoteric things that gave me the most difficulty when I was studying were obscure pain procedures/anatomy, non obvious anesthesia machine questions, and PALS/neonatal stuff

OH? I had no clue... sorry. Let me change the question then:

We studied a lot of topics that should be with our scope as anesthesiologists, but we don't use them on a daily basis. In studying the oral boards, I think reviewing such a list of topics would be really helpful.

Are there any resources that cover a comprehensive list of topics? Would the ABA content outline be a good comprehensive guides? Would love recommendation on comprehensive list of topics.

@vector2 thanks for the heads up, I just took PALS 2 weeks ago to refresh. Neonate stuff is indeed tough. I wasn't aware that pain procedures could be on there. I would have to review that. thanks!

A popular pain procedure point seems to be the celiac plexus block, the indications, complications, and to a lesser extent performance.

PALS/Neonate topics (especially resuscitation) are totally fair game and something you need to know cold for orals. I went over the protocols again the night before. It’s easy stuff to rattle off - once you get beyond the realm of general knowledge (e.g. ongoing arrhythmias, ionotrope dosing and titrations) I think it’s fair to “consult a reference text or a neonatologist”

Would FaceTiming my sibling, who is a neonatologist, be a acceptable answer?

Just posted in the thread about V Tach, looks like i'm adding things like how to do a stellate ganglion block to the list too :bored:
