Getting phosphatidylethanolamine and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol the extract consecutively

So I have a question that asks what can be used to get phosphatidylethanolamine and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol to extract to the aqueous layer consecutively. The answer says H2SO4 followed by NaOH. My wrong answer said NaOH before H2SO4. What's the difference?
