Hi
I recently matched into derm, YAY!!, and my derm advisor/mentor did so much for me this past year in terms of LOR, calling my top program, great advice, that I really want to get her something amazing as a thank you. My budget is $100 (or more if the gift is reallly awesome). What do you get someone that has everything?????

Rats... I was going to say get HIM a nice tie from Hermes or Ferragamo... hmm... I'll think about it. 😉

(Congrats on the match!)

LOL I was going to suggest Hermes as well.

For a female, she would love a scarf if you can afford it (~$400). It's visually appealing and has a nice texture. I've seen them all over the AAD. If she doesn't like the pattern, she can exchange it or even frame it as artwork in her house.

Your mentor's time was invaluable, especially since you matched. I think a budget of $100 may be too low. An Hermes scarf is timeless and very classy. Consider it.

+1 👍 Totally agree.

I bought my boss a Tiffany necklace after my PhD defense... the smile on her face was priceless! 😳

hmm, does this budget rule still apply for your derm LOR writers that didn't necessarily "go to bat" for you? $100-400 per LOR writer is honestly pretty steep for a med student if this is true... :eyebrow:

Are you guys serious??? Why would you spend $400 on a scarf a $300 on a tie??? Maybe if you had no chance in h3ll of matching without them. I would feel bad accepting a >$100 gift from a medical student.

Just my opinion

Amen to that.

I'm on board with mohderm too. I hope your mentors helped out of the goodness of their heart. I think a gift is a wonderful and thoughtful idea bit you don't have to throw a bunch of money into it...they're dermatologists after all. 🙄

My mentor crapped a Hermes tie once.

What do you give the man who has everything?

You have to give him something he doesn't even know he's been missing: an all access pass to the underground donkey show circuit. If everything goes right, he'll cry twice. First, upon the initial bequeathing of the gift, and then later when he realizes how awesome it is.
