Hi all,
I was curious about hospitalist opportunities in Neurology. I'd like to know about hours and scheduling. Are there many opportunities in this field? Are there any of you out there that practice as hospitalists. I'd appreciate your take as well and whether you'd do it again.

Cheers!

Neurohospitalist opportunities abound. I get ads for these weekly. Many hospitals have started to hire neurohospitalists these days as many general hospitalists are not very skilled at caring for neuro pts. Also, many of the bigger private practice neurology groups have realized it's more profitable for them to hire someone to work as a hospitalist so they are not distracted from focusing on their clinic patients. Most hospitals use the week on week off schedule where you'll be working 12 hr days the week that you're on. The regular hospitalist staff will cover your patients at night, but you may have to take some calls on top of that. The starting salary is usually around $200k. Your service will be dominated by stroke patients so I would not go into it if you dislike stroke. Some academic centers are starting to offer neurohospitalist fellowship training. I think this would be a waste of time if you go to an inpatient heavy residency, but may be worthwhile if you go to a community program. In my opinion the neurohospitalist job a great gig and I would be doing it right now if I wasn't pursuing academics.
