Can anyone tell me about SUNY? How was their interview experience? Has anyone been accepted? Do you really need something around a 350 on the OAT to get in? SUNY is the school I want to go to, so if anyone has any helpful information please let me know.
Thanks!

I had my interview last week. It was an individual open-file interview with 2 professors and fairly formal (a lot more so than PCO, from what the other interviewees said). They asked the standard questions, about some research I had done previously, and what I do in my free time. The other people got some current event questions during their interviews. There's also a short essay (1 page, 20 min).

I don't think you need a 350 OAT. SUNY's stats sheet says last year's class avg for Total Sciences was 336, so I wouldn't stress too much about it.

I would say to bring your transcripts, though. Somehow my officials were lost (probably in another applicant file), so I had to give them copies of the ones I brought.

All in all, a pretty relaxed day: essay, interview, financial counseling, tour, lunch with a student. We didn't get to meet with Dr. Johnston because he was out of town, but I guess he usually meets with the applicants after lunch. It was good for me, though, because I walked up to the Gershwin Theater and got a cancellation seat (row G!) for the matinee of Wicked.

Lots of luck! I really liked the school and the faculty we met, and you can't beat the location.

When Dr. Johnston visited my university a couple weeks ago we stressed that SUNY generally wants applicants to have at least a 320 in each section. However, he was careful to mention that a low score on a section could be mitigated by an impressive grade in a corresponding course.

Could you tell us some more about this short essay Polkadot? This is the first I've heard of it.

What kind of essay did you have to write? How long did they say it would be until they told you if you were accepted? Also, what type of current events questions did they ask you? Were they all pertaining to optometry? Did they ask you any questions to test your knowledge of the visual system?
Thanks!

For the essay, they give you 20 minutes to write on a specific topic. I think the essays for all the schools are to decide if you can organize your thoughts and also if you're the same person who wrote your personal statement on the application. I wouldn't stress too much about it. I only wrote about 10 sentences. My topic was, "What teaching and learning styles are most advantageous to you and why?"

Some of the other students were asked about the election. They asked me some stuff about the iris scanning work I've done before. There wasn't anything more technical than that. I was told that we'd hear back within the next two weeks on their decision.

my friend who went said the questions are very generic

I just got my acceptance letter (provisional b/c my OAT scores aren't back), and it took less than 2 weeks. YAY! 🙂 I'm really excited, although I wish Berkeley did interviews earlier. I like SUNY a lot; it's just kinda far from home.

Congrats! 🙂 I don't know where you're from, but there are a lot of out-of-staters at SUNY, especially from CA -- so if you do decide to come here, you won't be the only one far from home. 😉
