International immigrant- I have one question about getting into Radiology. I am a doctor from India with residency in radiology- and I have 3 years experience in radiology. I have avg USMLE score. I wonder if my experience of working in the same field is going to help me get the interview?

I heard from someone that I do not need to do residency at all in some states. Is that true or just one of those big talk about radiology?

I am confused..anybody...

Thanks

You can do the alternative pathway. Then, you don't need residency, but you need 4 years of training in fellowship. It should be all in the same institution and should all be in a row. You will not be able to choose your desired fellowship and you may end up doing ER, Nucs, Chest and again Nucs. The good part is you don't have to do internship and also you can save 1-2 years by going through this pathway. The bad part is, most groups look at you as sub-par compared to normal pathway graduates and you will have hard time finding a job. Also you may not be able to do certain fellowships.

I highly recommend you to apply for residency and I think you will be able to find a spot as most radiology programs appreciate your prior training. The trade-off is having 2 years more training compared to the shortcut pathway, but you will get rid of the negative stigma the rest of your life.

When the job market is good, nobody cares which track you graduated from. In this job market, groups look at you as second quality graduate and you will likely end up with less desirable job if you go through the alternative pathway. Now, what will be the job market like in 5-6 years, God knows.

Thanks Shark2000.

Does my prior experience help me get interviews or do they just consider USMLE scores for interview?

It helps getting interview. Probably not for top tier programs, but helps a lot for 2 nd and 3 rd tier ones.

Good luck.

Do IMGs from UK have chance getting a residency?
