Would love some feedback about the job market from residents about ready to graduate. Any news? I heard it's actually kind of tight out there, especially if you want to stay in major urban areas or go to places like New York or California. So we're not as recession-proof as we'd like to think.

Ouch although that seems to be a common trend among virtually all fields right now.

Don't believe it, the residents I just worked with this summer were receiving multiple letter offers about job opportunities. Many of them with VERY competitive pay and in desirable locations. Don't worry, the waits at Derm offices continue to be months out throughout the country, there are plenty of opportunities available.

what's the typical starting salary for someone fresh out of derm residency??

All I ever hear from my family members (So Cal) is how they can't find a derm who will take new patients/their derms have a 2 month waiting list. Seems like if you came down here and hung up a shingle ... you'd do well.

Interesting, I've always been told places like Cali and NY are incredibly difficult to break into (not just for derm but for all fields)

With only like roughly 325 or so new dermatologists entering the U.S. workforce every year how could there not be ample work everywhere you go in the U.S., even right in the middle of Beverly Hills or Manhattan? I would think it wouldn't take long at all to fill a patient schedule in a new private practice. But if you're trying to get a faculty position at UCLA then yeah that could be tough I assume.

I mean, my situation is anecdotal at best ... but I've been told by a few docs that derm is smart because of the small number of slots leading to the small number of new docs entering the field each year, which obviously keeps demand high and supply low.

I don't mean this in a mean way, but I would venture to guess that out of the nearly 5k posts that DO-wannabe-jag has posted, less than 2 have been factually accurate.

So you shouldn't find it interesting that what you know to be true, is in fact true.
