Just for kicks, whats the MOST you have ever heard of an optometrist making, from being an Optometrist?? I knwo that salary can vary a lot, but what the most any of you have ever heard of an OD making? (obviously not including other assets like stocks, real estate, etc.)

most 750,000 least 60,000

I know for a fact that two optometrists in the same office can vary greatly. One made 80K and the other 102K right out of optometry school.not bad

I don't think that 750,000 was from actually practicing optometry. He's gotta have something on the side there.

I shadowed an older well established optometrist who made 160k. He also told me that when he first started he almost went bankrupt because of some mistakes that he made.

An OD told me one of his friends signed a contract with Wal-Mart (not sure which state) in which he was promised a minimum of $200 000 a year...

That is pretty hard to believe. Perhaps this OD had a well established practice and agreed to move his office into Wal-Mart and send all his patients to their optical. If that is the case, he will most likely regret that move.

Wal-Mart cannot promise a minimum salary, since the OD is independent. What is typically discussed is potential based on known traffic patterns within the store. It is, however, very possible to make 200K in a very busy corporate location.

Are you sure this is the case everywhere? I think that in DC they can promise a salary. I may be wrong but I think that you work for Wal-Mart when in DC.

Not every Wal-mart has "independent Doctors of Optometry." I believe some states that is the norm, while in most they are "independent."

I know of at least one OD here (Utah) that is making about 250K a year, again, just from his practice alone. He is in private practice.

I am not sure. I assumed that the law in Washington state and California would be throughout the US, but I guess other states have not adopted that law. I would still be very skeptical about what WM guarantees.
