I'm a rookie when it comes to the match process, so don't flame me too much on this question. 😕

What happens if you don't match into Radiology, given that they have a year of PY or TY before starting rads anyways? Can said person just go to their PY or TY year, and then find a PGY-2 spot? I'm a little confused with the process, any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Jon

To match into just a PGY-1 year, you would have to put your prelims at the end of your primary list. If you don't match in rads but match to a prelim, then you can try to find open R-1 (PGY-2) spots as they come up throughout the year.

How often or how many spots open up typically?

What happens if you don't match rads but as a backup match medicine? Can you do a year of medicine and hope for a pgy-2 rads opening? If no opening comes up and you take time off for research, does your pgy-1 year still "count" the following year?

Thanks!

Also, is it bad to apply to 2 different programs at the same hospital?

From what I hear on the street...

1. Yes, although you will have to let your PD in medicine know that you'll be abandoning the program after the first year which is a tricky situation (although it is done). In general, you will be viewed much less favorably by radiology programs in the future for 1) having already applied and not matched, and 2) for not applying as a fourth year medical student.

2. Yes.

3. YES. There's always the distinct possibility that someone in either field will find out you're applying for both and spill the beans. A medicine program would never rank you highly if they found out you were applying to rads, and you certainly wouldn't want the rads programs to doubt your commitment to the field.

What if a hospital offers both combined (Transitional + Rads) programs and also separate Transitional and Rads programs?

Is it ok to apply to both in case I don't match the combined program?

I applied to different fields at the same hospital. As soon as the hospital offers me an interview in one field, I withdrew my app in the other field.
