MCPHS Manchester c/o 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's cool. I just went for an interview at Campbell University also.
Do you think you will be attending MCPHS?
The only thing that bugs me a little is the high cost of living in the area.

Hi Guys - I am in the 2012 class, so let me know if you have any questions!!

Well i already accepted and sent my deposit for a spot for fall 10. They way i look at it is nothing is cheap nowadays man and as much am concerned about the cost of everything am not going to worry about it now because its gonna be worth it at the end when its all said and done.

The main question that keeps popping up in my head is adjustment adjustment adjustment. How did you coupe with your first year and whats your advice for a new pharmd student that is about to start the program? Just bare with me lol because am gonna bother you with alot of questions thank you

I just sent my deposit in this past week also.
Looks like we're going to be classmates. 🙂

Well, I will be honest, the adjustment was very hard. I am a student that is used to doing very well with my grades, and you will find that you will not do as well once you get here. It's not that the information is hard, it's that you have so much info in such a short time. For instance, this past semester, which was my first, we had 27 exams, which includes the finals. So, after the math, you have on average 2 exams a week. It can be tough. I actually live in Maine with my husband, so I rent an apartment in Manchester with a classmate and only go home on weekends. This made it a little tougher as well, but it is definately worth the commitment! Everyone can do it, you just have to be ready to study every day and push forward no matter what!

Thank you very much. Also another question i have for is about study methods. Am used to going solo and i have always been successful that way through out my educational career, but for some reason am getting the impression that studying alone is not a good idea in a pharmacy program. Whats your perspective on this one? Thank you

I guess am going to see each other at orientation then but yeah i think the waiting part sucks. On the flipside that break is well needed!

Well, I am pretty much the same way and I have continued to study alone, as this works for me. I will get into study groups to shoot questions at each other, but for me this only helps as a method to ensure I already know the information. There are many people in my class that have formed little groups, but for the most part we study individually. A big tip for you guys though - we do make study guides as a group/class, which is a HUGE help! I am the type of person that makes study guides as we go along in class and about 2 days before the exam I start going through it and that is all I study. By mid-semester I was falling behind, as it was way too much. This is when people started to get together and split them up. If you guys as a class start this right away, you will definately be in good shape!

Yeah it looks like we will! I'm really excited.

Sunkissed- thanks for all the tips, I really appreciate it.

Congrats on your acceptance. MCP is an interesting school! Just be aware you are getting into an accelerated program so that when you learn you have 27 tests in 3 months, you don't feel overwhelmed or duped or anything. Sunkissed was right: the volume of material can be somewhat daunting, but it's all totally manageable. Just keep up on it and you'll be fine! I'm a p1 so if anyone has any questions about anything feel free to ask or PM me. 🙂

Describe your schedule during the week in a nut shell? how many hours do you put into your studies everyday or how many hours would you advise a new coming P1 student.

Yeah this is definitely the Major Leagues. 27 exams in a semester? Are they more like quizzes or final exams? Either way it doesn't matter i have to study study study. But just wanted to know what you think about the exams. Thank you Phanie and Sunkissed you guys are really helping

Describe your schedule during the week in a nut shell? how many hours do you put into your studies everyday or how many hours would you advise a new coming P1 student.

Last semester, we had about 5.5 hours of class (not counting breaks) two days a week, 2 hours one day a week, and 3 hours two days a week. Also a two hour service learning commitment once a week (mandatory volunteerism haha). I personally would go to school whenever class started, sit through them all, and then start studying about an hour after class ended. I would usually study for about 4 extra hours a day Mon-Thurs. I didn't study on Friday except to review that day's notes (about 30min-1hr). Doing that basically gave me one weekend day to do NO schoolwork. I would use the other weekend day to do about 6-7 hours of work. About the last 1/4 of the semester, things start getting reaaaal heavy... lots of tests, stuff due, etc... you need to dedicate a little more time, maybe study a little bit more on the weekend and a couple extra hours each day.

It is definitely intense, but by doing that level of work, I got As in all the classes. If you don't care so much about the actual grades, study a bit less! I read all the books and everything so that takes time.

There's my schedule in a nutshell. One thing they told us at the interview was true... school will take up like all your time!

Hey guys,
I was wondering weather pcat is mandatory at mcphs worcester, If so, can someone tell me their pcat score just for comaprison. I'm doing pre-pharmacy (really pre med) prerequisites at umass, and planning on applying at worcester campus next year.
Thank you

Thanks very much. I kinda already had it in mind that its not going to be a walk in the park and that its going to be intense. I wanted to know or get a picture of how you handle the intensity and you really helped.

Thanks once again.

hi, i'm new to this forum. thanks for the insight you provided for the incoming p1 guys. i got accepted to the worcester campus for fall 10-still have 2 pre-reqs to complete though. i hear students are given a list of 200 drugs to memorize. is this true? my background is purely in th mathematical sciences so i also need some advice on the best way to handle the biological classes at mcphs. thanks

Bushdoc,

They give you a list of the Top 200 drugs and over the course of 3 semesters you'll need to know them. Such as strength, dosage form, name brand, generic, color and size...Ok I'm kidding about the color and size..It's not as bad as you think it will be..you have plenty of time to learn them..

Hey Guys,

I just found this site and I'll be in the Manchester class of 2013. So I guess I will see you in the Fall! Has anyone looked into housing in Manchester yet?

I can't wait for the fall and am pumped. As for your question concerning housing, naaa i haven't started looking for a place but i will be taking care of that over the summer.

About the housing - I would look into renting an apartment with some classmates. It's easier this way, as you will understand the need for "quiet study time". There are plenty of places within a couple of miles from the campus. On a side note - when you guys start classes there will be some sales for different items, so make sure to save some extra money for this. One of the items, which I HIGHLY recommed, are the drug cards. There are 2 sets, one is OTC and the other is the top 300. As Sooner already mentioned, you will have to know these inside and out. It is like $70 for both and totally worth it - it will save you a ton of time filling out the charts they give you.

Hi there everyone!

I can't believe how fast time flies and that I've already been at MCP Manchester for a whole year! I'm sure you are all super excited to get started as P1s later this week... feel free to ask or PM me with any questions you may have or any of your concerns... I remember how nervous I was since everything was so unknown! Good luck!

hi, I am in the 2011 class and am actually leaving back for ME at the end of September. I know most of the new class will have made arrangements by then, but in the off chance that you havent, my current roommate is looking for someone. The apt is about 300 feet from the campus, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, livingroom, studyroom. Current roommate is female, 30, quiet, non-mcphs student. It will be available 9/27. 1 year lease required, $450 a month plus half electric, heat, and net. Last month my share was around 65 bucks, its slightly more in the winter

Oh, and feel free to send me other questions related to MCP-Manchester if you desire... Good luck and study hard!
