i dont even know if i spelled it right. anybody thinking about ranking U of Minnesota highly because of the program itself, but hesitating to live in Minneapolis? anybody ever lived or visited Minneapolis and want to shed some light on how cool/uncool the city is? i know its cold.

I went to med school there. It's cold. THe coldest it got in 4 years was -35F on the thermometer (not "wind chill" but actual temp!). People have to plug their cars into outlets overnight to get them to start in the am.
On the other hand, it's a good city, lots of stuff to do. I always said when we lived there that if mpls were in a warmer state and had the 100's of lakes in and around it, that it would be packed with millions of people. The cold keeps it on the small side, which is probably a good thing for mpls (the accepted abbreviation btw).

In the summer it'll hit 100 F and get muggy. So yeah, not many places have a 135 degree temp swing from season to season. Brace yourself.

I'm actually the opposite - I loved the city, but didn't like the program. It was a real struggle to move mpls down on the rank list, because I liked the city so much! Very cool, hip, beautiful, friendly, and *smart* city. Agree with above poster that, if a few degrees warmer, would have a lot more people.

People embrace the winters and seem to get a kick out of the fact that they can manage pretty well in it. Lots of winter activities, and summers are gorgeous. People are active and healthy. Beautiful Christmases. If you are already from the Midwest or Northeast, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

I am not sure about plugging in your car, I think that is for older cars, but correct me if I'm wrong. It does get frighteningly cold, though. Again, if the program I am looking at was better, it would be at the top of my rank list.

I may be overgeneralizing here about how great a city it is. But people who grew up there tend to stay, and many transplants stay as well.

i lived in minneapolis for 5 years...not all cars need to be plugged in, the city does a nice job of keeping the roadways clear of snow and ice, lots to do, great diversity of people and cultures...as far as the program, I don't know. I hear they are well respected. So if you want to go because of the program don't let the weather stop you, it's a beautiful city in a very beautiful state.

I was born and raised in MN and won't likely move back, not just because of the weather but that's definitely part of it. My memories of the car/road situation are this. If you have off-street parking, no problem, especially if it's garage parking. If you have street parking it's a pain because you have to move your car for plows, occasionally they'll plow around the car if not moved (major pain with getting the car out of the drift), and driving the car in the morning and being so cold it hurts.

The other memories are of skating on Lake of the Isles, Xcountry skiing in the the city, great bar scene (too cold to be outside I guess), and how beautiful fresh snow looks. But it's still damn cold!

you'll do OK if at least used to the snow and cold to some degree, but if you think "cold" is 20F, like I said, brace yourself.

thanks for the feedback. i think minneapolis will fit my needs socially and im not going to let the cold push it down my rank list. im applying for general surgery and will find out in a few weeks where im going. good luck to all of you in the match!
