I may be jumping the gun here, but I've applied to Waterloo. In the event that I get accepted and have to move there, what kind of costs (roughly) would I be looking at (in total) over the course of the 4 years, including tution, fees, books, equipment, average rent, meals etc.

No that is good you are thinking about it. If you are considering living in a residence you must apply for it before you know you will be accepted...I think.

I don't/didn't live in res, so I couldn't help you, but here are rough estimates

Tuition per year: $10,000
Rent (assuming year long lease): $6,000 per year
Food/Bills: $2,000 per year
Equipment: $6,000 total
Books: $0-$3,000 total
Boards (Cdn. only): $3,500 total
Externship stuff: $? (if residence is paid, not paid, etc).
Flights home: $500 per year
Furniture etc: $? (depends)
Other misc expenses: $500 per year
Interest on student line of credit: $500 annually

The roughest estimate is about $20k per year with everything. Of course, I know some people who were $50k in debt after first year, other who are now $50k in debt through half of second year, and still more who actually have money in the bank right now (good earners, scholarships, student loans or parents paid their way). You'll get an entire cross section. It also depends what you want to do while you're here, trips to Toronto, how many books you want to buy, etc. Oh and if you have a car, add in another $2k probably.

It's all up to your lifestyle and how you want to live, but like I say, plan on being near $100k if you spend somewhat frivolously by the time you're done.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, that helped a lot!

I've never borrowed money before (especially not 100k). Can anyone help me out on how the best ways to get loans are?

Thanks

the best way, by far, is provincial and canada student loans. interest free, and they give you a good chunk. depends on your situation (how old you are, where you live) but look into that.

second best way is a line of credit. i recommend royal bank, they have the highest limit and best options (for me at least) and have been nothing but great so far.

you should be covered properly between those two! what province are you from?

ooh good thread. This is definitely something I worry about. Waterloo is definitely far from Alberta! As far as scholarships go, is there really that much out there? There's lots for undergrad students and those interested in research, but I haven't really seen any for students going into a health-related field after their undergraduate years.

I'm from Quebec.
How does a line of credit work?

YOU'RE FROM QUEBEC?!?!?!?!?!

oh yeah sorry i;m totally whacked out here lol..... ok well for us quebecers who dont want to stay in Montreal what with 40cm snow and stationnary traffic....but I still love Montreal..... we have QC government loans and BMO, CIBC, TD, and you could check National Bank
