There are tons of opportunities for research (and most fellowships have lots of research built in), but there are tons of clinical only opportunities. You will not find a shortage of patients

What is the compensation of a clinical only neuroonc doc? Is it the same as heme onc?
 
Maybe an academic Heme Onc, which is probably not what you’re looking for if you’re trying to back door into Heme Onc compensation.

You’re not going to find many (if any) private practice NeuroOnc jobs IMO.

I imagine research in NeuroOnc is difficult because the trials would either take a decade+ if non-GBM OR even worse they are for GBM.
 
Clinically, neuro-onc is in high demand so you don't need to promise to be a big researcher. Practically, a lot of the jobs are academic so you might want to express interest in a traditional niche - research, admin, and/or teaching. Think of it, to offer patients top-of-the-line treatment, you need to be in clinical trials or have the resources of a cancer center. Even still I think demand for the field is strong and there are a lot of centers that would love to have a neuro-onc and can't find one.
