So as a third year, I have tried emailing my home institutions derm department I get involved with some research but they told me nothing is available.

What do you guys recommend I do? Thanks!

I'd maybe try doing a 3rd year elective in dermatology and see if you can pick-up something like a case report, review paper, etc. that's easy. Anything more than that is unrealistic for 3rd year anyway.

If more intensive research is something you want to do, I'd maybe consider a year off after third year either to strengthen your resume/connections or pursue a project in an area of academic medicine you have a legitimate interest of going into (i.e. clinical vs. basic science vs. other).

hmm so when everyone says you need a lot of research for derm, is a case report or something all they mean?

lol in a different field? if so, what field?

there aren't any other academic institutions in my area

anything is better than nothing. just get something published in a peer review journal.

and if there isn't any academic center near your place, then leave the area and find one. nothing will just be handed to you on a silver platter.

Have you tried talking to someone in person, rather than just emailing? Person to person is almost always the best way to get a positive result to a potentially difficult ask. You need to start making contacts in your derm dept asap in any case, so that there are people who will have a year's worth of things to mention about you in your LORs.

So who do you know in the derm department? Go see them (either make an appointment, or go at a time you know they will be free to talk to you), tell them of your interest, ask for their advice - do they know of any current or upcoming research you could be involved in, is there anything else you could do?

If there is still nothing for you in the derm dept., can you do some related research in another dept?

hmm i've emailed everyone i know in the derm department lol, i figure it would be odd if i send an email to the same people asking to meet with them now. although i do see your point of the importance of face to face contact

Agree with the above. Be more persistent with your home department (tactfully of course), do a rotation elsewhere and try to hook onto a research project, take a year off for research, etc

Everyone has some form of research in their cv now so you need to keep up. A case report is better than nothing but ideally, you'll be able to generate something more substantial particularly since you've started planning as a third year
