Hi. I was searching for information on Dermatology and I had a few questions I was hoping I could have answered on this board since it's difficult to ask IRL.

1. Why is it that quite a few dermatologists look less happy than doctors in other lifestyle specialties?
Their minds seem heavily weighted by something.
whereas the few radiologists I've met look like they're walking on air.

2. Why is it that rumors tend to say that Derm rotations are harder than radiology rotations?

3. How high is the risk of catching something (virus or otherwise) while practicing dermatology?

I apologize in advance if I have offended anyone.

I apologize in advance if I have offended anyone.

1. You can't generalize an entire specialty based on interactions with a few dermatologists and a few radiologists. If I were to speculate, it's because dermatologists have to see a ton of patients. And even if you love patients, there's no denying that can wear on a doctor at some point.

Conversely, there are probably plenty of radiologists who are sick and tired of the workload. This image and that image and that image needs to be interpreted.

2. Again, it depends. If you're trying to get into any one of these fields, of course it's going to be rough. You're trying to stay for as long as possible, work as hard as possible, impress as many as possible, and all without ticking off anyone by appearing overzealous or psychotic.

If you're talking about a 4th year rotation just to notch the necessary credits, radiology is of course the easier choice. Most students sit behind a resident/attending, observe for 3 hours, and then are sent home because there's not too much to do student-wise. Dermatology rotations are often like clinic-hours which means there's plenty to do. (Although that being said, if you're not interested in the field and are just using it for easy credits, you often get let out at a very reasonable time too. We're not talking OBGYN hours here)

3. Wear gloves at all times, shower daily. At least you aren't facing needlesticks.

... actually, dermatologists cut/suture and use lidocaine on about an hourly basis. preferably not in that order.

Oops, I take it back.

Wear gloves, shower daily, and pray. 😉
