What's up with all of these NYC programs having major facility renovations? When I interviewed at Cornell, I saw that they were redoing a huge area of their department.
Also, Mt. Sinai is totally gutting the entire floor!! I saw the blue prints (posted in resident's room) and it is going to be amazing, but I hope it is finished before next year. I think it would suck to have to work around all of that construction. However, the new resident's room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking central park and 7 separate multiheaded microscope rooms will be nice.

Anyone have any thoughts about working in a department midway through construction? Pros vs. cons?

The histology lab in our program (not in NYC) is being redone starting this month, and it is going to be a pain in the ass for a couple of months. Things work best in programs when there is routine. Changing the routine means things get ****ed up. Thus, I have no doubt there will be more cases that slip through the cracks over the next month - mostly because people won't know where to go to drop stuff off, etc. And the new temporary site for histology is decidedly inconvenient, which also causes problems.

So generally, the construction is unlikely to be long lasting, and there will be issues for short periods of time. But I wouldn't avoid a program because of construction, unless of course they were planning four years of construction to start July of your first year, and things would be changed to elimininate many resident educational opportunities during the course of construction. For us it isn't going to change much, it will just mean more hassle in the course of some day to day things.
