Ok, if you have read many of my posts, you know that I'm pretty much (barring a miracle) set on going to Georgetown's SMP.

My question is, where should I "reside?" CA, or DC? I am not sure how long it takes to officially establish residency in DC, but lets assume I can transfer in time, here's my reasoning:

The biggest reason to remain a CA resident is for the five UC medical schools. It is extremely difficult to get into them, but it would be that much harder if I were not a CA resident. However, I am not married to the idea of returning to CA. In fact, I actually do not like CA at all, and am hoping to never come back. The only reason I would go to a UC med school was if it was clearly the best school of any and all schools I was accepted to.

I don't really see any advantage, inherently, of being a DC resident. I would save a little money in day to day type living stuff, but that is all.

Does anyone know, would there be a reason to try to switch? Do any schools look more favorably upon DC residents than CA? If it helps, I would prefer to go to med school in PA, IL, or MI (all three are close to family).

This may all be an ignorant question, but I thought I would throw it out to see if anyone was aware of anything I wasn't.

Thanks!

CA for sure. i don't think DC residency would help you in any which way.

The only reasons to become a DC resident -

1.) You have a car and need to get a permit to park on the street.

2.) You feel some burning desire to vote in a city that goes 90% democratic every year.

That's all. Although GWU says it gives extra consideration to residents of the district with regard to admission, if you are not planning on going there, don't bother.

Without question you should stay a California resident. Can't say I'm not a little jealous. I'm a New Hampshire resident living in DC - I don't get an advantage from either!! 🙁
