I'm a little confused. Exactly where are you getting your list from?
Middleton wrote the requisites on US. Carol Rumack wrote the definitive 2 volume on US (shes at Colorado).
Webb wrote the book on HRCT, and is a well known name in body imaging, Reed is old school. He was a big dog decades ago. Mettler for nucs.

IMO there are too many big dogs in each field to designate a single big dog. For instance in IR there are those that are world experts in vascular, onc, UFE, AVM treatment. You can't be a master of it all. And Michael Darcy? I'm sure he's probably a great interventionalist, but he's not one that first comes to mind when I think of cutting edge interventionalists.

Just because they haven't written a textbook doesn't mean they aren't a big dog. The true leaders of the field you'll see repeatedly publish in journals. No one in your list teaches at the AFIP -- some of those lecturers are definitely world class.

Hans

Paul J. Chang, MD, FSCAR
Vice Chairman, Radiology Informatics
Medical Director, Pathology Informatics
University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine
Medical Director, Enterprise Imaging
University of Chicago Hospitals

As you can see, he's no longer at Pitt.

What a bogus list. Funny that it had so many errors.

I stand by my list. Current location is moot. The key is the name recognition.

These are the all-stars of today. A letter of recommendation from these folks will be recognized by any radiologist.

I agree that some of these people are on the academic pedestal of their careers, and they are not publishing papers as much.

However, if you go to any of the radiology meetings such as RSNA, ARRS, SIR, ACR these are the current giants of the field.

Sure a part of it is self promotion. The best radiologists in the world might not even be in academia. The point is that the people on my list are the celebrities of radiology. Ask a japanese or a russian radiologist about Dr. Resnick or Dr. Reed they will know who you are talking about. That is the point.

Thus, they are the Big Dogs of today, the Big Dogs of tomorrow are the ones working their butts off with publications today.

Any list with less than 5-10 names per subspecialty on average is totally arbitrary. There are some subspecialties that only few names really shine, such as Don Resnick in MSK. Others on the other hand, have so many stars that it's hard to pick from more that 20 or so people. For example, neuroradiology.

Also, what is considered the A-list in the eyes of a resident will be very different for practicing general radiologists, and in turn very different for subspecialists in a specific field. The reason is that a resident knows these people from the resident-level textbooks or general meetings, whereas the subspecialists knows the stars from their specialty publications, subspecialty societies and conferences, etc.

For example, Reed is famous in the eyes of a resident (his plain film book), and he is known in the chest radiology world for his time at the society for thoracic radiology. But in this day and age, there are so many more prominent people like Rick Webb, Nestor Muller, etc. Or people not really into radiology informatics, probably have never heard of Paul Chang.

to think p53 actually has some say as to the elite in rads as a 4th year med student is laughable. 🙄

i find clueless people quite opinionated.😴

Those that have read my radiology posts know that there is substance behind my words. I am a member of all the radiology societies that I mentioned. Unlike the people in the bleacher seats, I have personally attended all of the society meetings and have rubbed elbows with the leaders in radiology. This list is from the discussions with academic radiologists.

Ask anyone in Pediatric Radiology. The Big Dog is Lane Donnelly.
Valerie Jackson is a former President of the ACR and is on the board of directors of RSNA. She has published numerous papers on mammography. Gautham and Geoffrey Rubin have given Cardiac CT lectures for ARRS and was recognized as the leaders of the field. Yousem and Grossman were recognized at the Neuroradiology conference in San Diego for being pre-eminent. Michael Darcy is the leader of SIR and the DIRECT pathway is his brainchild.

I can go on and on. The point is that I am connected to Radiology because I read JVIR, JACR, Radiology, AJR, Academic Radiology, and AJNR. 99% of the people (including radiologists) that read my posts won't even know what all of the acronyms that I listed mean.

For the pundits the slinging is futile, if you research the names I listed you will agree with the list. Then again, if I was LAZY I would use the same argument because I wouldn't have to look it up.

Bottomline: People on SDN know that I have a pulse on Radiology. I will continue to post useful information. I am very knowledgable of Radiology.

i don't mean to flame, but if that was your point, then why didn't you just say, "hey everybody, i'm connected to radiology, yadda, yadda, yadda..."

was this list solicited? it seems like if someone really wanted to know who the "best" MSK radiologist in the country is, they wouldn't need a list on SDN to research or confirm that.

Well, I guess I'm Jesus since I've attended church on Sundays. 🙄

Rubbed elbows??? or is it frotteurism that you mean! :meanie:

"Because I'm good enough, smart enough, and gosh darnit people like me!" 👍

I'm glad you've done some homework, unlike a lot of other people who come through this forum.

But you're trying a little too hard with the name dropping. It reeks eau d' P-O-S-E-R. Just a friendly suggestion: keep it out of your interviews.

Why are you even here?

I got it. It is because you don't have the grades and Step 1 to match into Radiology.

Do us all a favor and SHUT UP and go back to the pathology forum. This thread is for radiology applicants.

Nice comment about "frotteurism" from left field. Weirdo.

Another loser with no ties to radiology.

Once again this thread is for the radiology applicants. My purpose is to help guide students with legitimate names. The purpose of the replies are to flame. If you don't like my list, IGNORE it. This thread is not for pathology, medicine, or pediatric students. Nor is this thread meant to debate whether there are "one" Big Dog in each subspecialty.

For the radiology students, when people mention BigWigs it is good to know who they are talking about. 99% of BigWigs are regional. My list of radiologists are nationally prominent.

Hmmm...what's your step 1 score? You still haven't revealed it. 🙄

Also, I DO have the step 1 score, grades, research, pubs, awards, and patents. 😛

You give SDN a bad name, tool.

Another loser with no ties to radiology.

I'll try to remember this while I'm reading out with my attending this afternoon.

You truly are a poser; the word fits you perfectly.

Good luck in trying to get into rads, d@uchebag.

Please, lets not let this degrade into a flame war.

Yes, p53 has listed SOME top names, but let us not be deluded into thinking they are the ONLY big names in radiology.

He has done some homework, which I commend him for. A lot of people come in and ask about salary and vacation first (all of which is available if you google it-- its not that hard), before they ask anything remotely pertaining to radiology. p53's style may be abrasive-- p, can we tone it down a bit?

2Tim, Colbg... I can definitely understand your annoyance, but lets be cool.
Chillax everyone...

Can't we all get along?

No grudges. If you attend my research presentation at RSNA 2006 and ask a question, I will respond to you.

People may not like p53's style but he's got some points. I for one will pay attention to the names he mentioned with the understanding that there's more "Big Dogs" out there in Radiology and a few on the way up. Thanks for taking the time to get those names up, p53.

Someone needs to go and ask him his Step1 score 🙂

p53 please let us know where you end up, I pray it is not at my program!

You are kidding right? Please say you are kidding? Oh please!

"Rubbed elbows"   Member of . . . . societies:laugh:

One question, why are you even applying for a residency? All that elbow rubbing must surely advance you past residency.

Those poor poor people in the bleacher seats who aren't has fortunate as you.....

You REALLY do think you are better than everyone else don't you? Please, BE YOURSELF on the interview field.

Haha... You wasted at least 10 minutes of your life to reply back to me (even though I have never made a comment to you) on MY thread.

How does it feel to get inside your head and control you?

You got mentally used!

Was it good for you?

Hey, p53 because you have such a itsy-bitsy 'p?n?s' AHEM I mean 'self-esteem' this is what I'll say!

p53 you are great and above all else.
p53 you are superior to all in knowledge.
p53 you are postered/published in <10 meetings/journals.
p53 your step 1 score is "99." (which btw is my score, also! 😉 )

The world knows by your posts you are still a virgin. Enjoy your future trip to Vegas! :meanie:

I don't know what you are implying with the Vegas trip because it is illegal. Coincidentally, I will in Vegas at the Bellagio in two weeks for Dr. Resnick's MSK conference. For those that are going, I will be the guy in the front row that looks like my avatar wearing a white armani dress shirt.

Be yourself in interviews. . . especially with residents. They are VERY impressed by "'elbow rubbers" and 4th years who aren't in the "bleachers."

Wait, I thought only people with 260s on step 1 get to sit in the front row???

p53 is just working everyone up, which is kind of funny I admit... but honestly, a presentation at RSNA is pissing in the wind. Pronouncing the big dogs that you think you perceive at RSNA, where there are 49,999 other people, is also kind of lame.

For those that are going, I will be the guy in the front row that looks like my avatar wearing a white armani dress shirt.
You mean a shirt like the one in said avatar? Wow, you must be real proud of that shirt if you schedule when to wear it months in advance.

This thread, so graciously posted by p53, is of no consequence. One name per field.

Puh-lease.

I know you're an egotistical liar without the ball$ to post your Step I score.

And your grammar "ain't so hot neither."

And you match.................when?

You are free to post your opinion, whether people agree with you or whole-heartedley disagree with you. But this thread is heading toward the flames...
