Are pathologists given annual salaries (for, say, hospitals) or are they reimbursed per procedure?

You guessed it. Yeah, basically everytime I read a GI biopsy, the gastroenterologist tosses me a wadded up 20 dollar bill, sometimes he tips but not usually. The cheap bastard!

I get a little more love from the heme crew, say a Ben Franklin note and if I read a few immunostains, they put a Abe Lincoln in the waistband of my scrubs as a tip.

Sorry, I can't tell whether or not you are joking. Even if you are joking:

Can you please go into details as to how pathologists are compensated and whether or not it depends on if the pathologist works at a hospital or private practice (if there is such a thing in path)?

Thanks in advance

Dude, I am serious. I walk home everynight and hit the bank with a paper lunch bag of cash. I can give you the number of the Sikh guy from the Quick-n-Easy Mart who usually stands in line at the bank with me for confirmation if youd like. My ex was a stripper at Century Gentleman Club in LA and we would sometimes compare our takes for the day. Only rarely did I beat her and even those rare instances ended once she got that boob job.

Pathology reimbursement is a complicated topic and you are probably best looking elsewhere for the info - I am not sure where though. I personally don't understand enough about it yet. There are standard billing fees for different types of things (standard biospy interpretation gets a certain amount, special studies an additional, etc). But in general I think what often happens (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the path department receives a flat fee from the institution they work for and if they bill for more than that they may not necessarily receive it. In general you receive a standard salary, but for other things such as consults you can get more fee for service.

But I'm just talking out of my ass now.

They pay me peanuts...literally. I see the GI guy coming over now with a bunch of endoscopics and a bag of cashews. The CT surgery guys usually give me shelled walnuts...ummmm...walnuts!

Private practice pathologists have to bill for their services like all docs.

Academics and county hospital pathologists make a salary. Some academic positions pay you more the more you work. Kaiser docs get paid salaries also.

Private practice pathologists used to be paid a cut of the total billed for the laboratory and surgical services. In 1982 or 83, the federal government declared that unethical and mandated that pathologists have to bill like all physicians.
