Can Pathologists prescribe drugs? I can't see any real need for them having to, but it would kinda' suck to be a physician and not have that authority.

They can

It varies by state. In some states, all physicians have fairly uniform prescriptive authority. (They still have to have special training to prescribe certain drugs like isotretinoin, thalidomide). In other states, like WA, the scope of practice limits prescriptive authority. So, unless you are treating patients, you can't prescribe anything. And, you can only prescribe drugs related to your treatment. (ie: surgeon can't prescribe BC pills)

Unless you're a pathologist with clinical responsibilities (for ex: a plasmapheresis unit), why would you need (or want) that authority?

Example..my kid has allergies but I have to run to the pediatrician to get them some meds, instead of being able to prescribe the allegra myself. Not trying to farm out vico., just some things would be more convenient if (as a physician) you had the ability to prescribe meds.

I can, at least within the hospital pharmacy. Probably not narcotics though. I haven't tried though.

It would be more convenient if everyone had access to rx's without an office visit, but that's not necessarily what is best for the kids. Peds dosing for Allegra can be looked up. But, it's not A drug of choice for peds patients.

Cool, well thanks for clearing up the curiosity.

A Pathologist actually writing drugs, Thats crazy Id rather have someone with some real formal training like a Nurse practicioner or a PA do that. I mean what does a M.D. mean anyway.

There are some who would consider med school to be a form of training.

I think as long as you have an MD and have a liscense to practice medicine in your state you can write. Post grad training in whatever is irrevelent. However, heres where it can get you. No writing weight loss drugs (stimulants) no writing narcotics, and I beleive you have to have some kind of charted documentation that you have actually seen the patient. Why take the chance of you career with a criminal investigation. Now for families im sure its not a biggie as far as some drugs are concerned, but there is the other side of the coin :internet Rx. If you want to stay out of trouble with johnny law i wouldnt get involved with that sort of thing (internet viagra) but at the same time you have GP's and Family docs performing cosmetic procedures, all kinds of scopes (not in underserved areas with no formal training) and not getting hit but they are taking a big chance. Yes its a big pain to get your kid to the peds doc and if its simple enough whats the big deal, but then dont turn around and write your wife or even worse her friend a bunch of xanax. I personally believe that I will get my DEA # but Id only use it in an emergency and I dont know if I will have to work somewhere where I might need it (pheresis unit or whatever). It cant hurt to have one especially when anyone one in healthcare can these days. Thats my 1 and 1/2 cents sorry about spelling and grammer.

Because being an MD Pathologist is certainly enough training to write a prescription. More so than a NP or PA.

Let's hope this doesn't turn into *yet another* MD vs. NP/PA thread 🙄

Thats not true, well at least in most states. A sugron can prescribe whatever he/she wants. Ive seen it first hand many times, alot of docs choose to do some Primary stuff as well as speciality you do whatever you want. No one really cares too much unless you kill someone with lethal pills they shouldnt have. (ie the drugs you mentioned earlier)
Unless you are doing mass distribution or selling on the street noone cares.

I said nothing untrue. The fact is that in some states (like WA) you are limited by your scope of practice while in others you can prescribe more broadly. My source is pharmacy law class.

Oh, my lovely mcfaddenns- I did read the subsequent post. That is why I refrained from giving you the tongue lashing you so richly deserved for the previous one. Those who speak ill of the pathologists must be punished... Or at least threatened. 🙂

PS- Sweet is the only way I know how to talk. 😉

PPS- You should be so lucky to be violated by me. 😛

Notice the copious use of emoticons- that is to help you understand that most of the time I am kidding.

 Truce?
