We’re much more accepted in the specialty, and I think the slope is going to continue in that direction. I think the number of derm PAs relative to the number of other dermatology providers is going to keep climbing. In 10 years, it’ll become fact that the majority of providers doing routine clinical dermatology services are PAs. The specialty is going to be ceded to the PAs if things continue the way they’re going.

So is this the new trend - PAs practicing independent dermatology? 😕😕😕

nope, not independent. I know joe. he works as part of a group practice headed by docs. he has a broad scope of practice and writes 3-4 derm articles/mo for peer reviewed medical journals but he still works for a physician group and has an md supervisor.

Just remember that physician assistants always have to have a supervising MD. Physician assistants in theory can only take over dermatology if dermatologists want them there.

I was curious about this (as I am a research person). So, I plugged him into pub med... he does have 34 articles... all of which are in the JAAPA, which might be peer reviewed (which I am not sure about, you tell me, do they have MD reviewers? or is the review all done by PAs?), but that is no where near as impressive as you make it sound.

He has a lot more articles/publications than that. he has several monthly columns with photo essays in a variety of publications and has for > 10 yrs...... widen your search....HERE'S ONE FOR STARTERS....
Joe Monroe, PA-C, performed a biopsy of the scalp; findings included focal fibrotic changes ...

I wonder if monthly columns and photo quizzes don't show up in pubmed searches(?) He writes a monthly column in consultant magazine with a photo quiz.

All those articles are in what we call "throw-away journals". That may look impressive to Aunt Sue, but even a community doc can tell they're crap.
