HI all,

I'm an FMG and I've decieded to apply next year to neuro residencies. So I really have more than a year and a half for research. Any ideas about paid research or organized fellowships for med school graduates?

Thanks...

Any takers?

Where do I start looking for research fellowships? Are there ANY out there for neuro? 😳

OK. Let me rephrase this...for real.

I've been totally out of the loop for the last one year due to personal trauma. Is there anyway that I can get my s*** back together by strengthening my application with research that would explain significant time off after med school. I'll be applying to neuro residencies next year and would like to go to a strong program.

The main issue is to get paid doing research. Any random thoughts much appreciated?

Do you live anywhere around a medical school or large university? If so, print up some resumes, get over there (in person), and start introducing yourself to lab directors and neurology/neuroscience faculty. Explain your situation and ask if they need anyone. Don't expect to make a ton of money, and if they offer you even so much as a lab tech job, take it -- yes, you are probably overqualified, but since it's only for a year, it doesn't much matter, and it keeps you working and gives you something to put on your resume. You may even get something publishable out of it if you can draw on your medical knowledge to make more than a technical contribution.

Somewhat related question: Have you already taken and passed parts 1 and 2 of the USMLE? If not, this would be a great time to get that out of the way.
