Prelim Med vs. Surg

I am wondering which is a better option for intern year. It seems like surg would be a good pick because of the number of biopsies performed and they all need closure. However, everyone recommends medi.

at most places a surgery internship is going to be its own special form of pain, so i would be careful with that. at the same time, my months of medicine have had almost no impact on day-to-day dermatology. transition years where you can do some plastics seem to me to be the best bet because you can start to develop some surgical skills that will actually help you later, and you can minimize the time you spend doing MI rule-outs and gomer placements.

I'd rather do some on-the-job learning rather than undergo a preliminary surgery year for that. 😉

I'd do a prelim med year. more relevant to the average derm resident's day.

Then again, if you can get away with doing a transitional, do it! 🙂
