Hi Everyone,

I have applied to approximately 10 prelim internal medicine programs and have heard back from only a couple as to my interview status. I am wondering if this is normal? Are they still coming or should I be a little worried with only a couple? At this point is there anything I can do anyways? I was hoping for at least a few more. I hope all is well on the trail, good luck everyone.

Ya everything is in and what not, I submitted early, like Sept 3.

I'm in the exact same situation. I haven't been rejected for any prelim interviews, but I only have 4 interviews set up. Is it common to not match into a prelim spot?

i've never heard of anyone not getting a prelim spot. they are about 1 billion times easier to get into them derm, and most derm applicants can just pick what program they want to go to, send in an app, get a cursory interview and be done with it.

it is a bit early for prelim programs, BUT if you know you are going to some city to interview for derm, and have not heard from a corresponding prelim program in that city, i would not hesitate to call them and try to coordinate. its about 95% likely they will oblige you with an interview. they may have just not been thinking about it yet.

I hope you only plan on doing 1 year. 🙂

On a more serious note, what Bactrim said, email them. I don't know anything about programs giving out interviews just because you have an interview for your Advanced area. Hope they would though. 🙂

If you applied to prelims outside the general geographic area of your med school, they may assume you are not really interested. If this is the case, I'd definitely email them to express interest and give a reason why you want to go to that particular area.

Can you even do this if you did not apply to the prelim program? In other words, if I get an invite at a certain derm program, can I contact the same institution's medicine program even if I did not apply through ERAS back in Sept? Thanks!

I haven't done it yet, but I know people have. You just contact the programs and work out an interview. Then you just have to apply on ERAS to make it official so you can rank the program.

It makes sense since a person interviewing for Derm would probably have a high chance of ranking the prelim program if they are ranking the derm program.
