I have heard that recently the job market for general radiologists is not extensive, and that instead fellowships are the standard. Is this true?

Also, how competitive are radiology fellowships and does it make a difference if you apply straight out of residency or wait a couple years before applying?

Thanks in advance!!

i think there was a thread about this about a month ago, if you want to do an advanced search.

man, what happened to your boys yesterday? effing ND, i hate them so much.

right now the market is fairly hot such that people coming out of residencies are receiving great offers and find it hard to justify going into additional training with a contract offer on the table. that said, it is much easier to get into a fellowship now than it was maybe 10 years ago when salaries for radiologists weren't so lucrative, and people pursued additional training to secure better pay / followed what they wanted to do and weren't distracted by the moneyman.

I know that our practice places no premium or fellowship training. Most residents do opt for fellowships, but that doesn't bring any more money or attractiveness for our practice. In fact, in order to secure future manpower we have started signing up third and fourth year residents and pre-paying them a signing bonus while they are still in training. It works very well. We get the pick of the litter and they bet extra money when they can really could use it. These people are not doing fellowships, however.
