ive heard different things from people but i wanted to get it cleared up before i send my rank order intent email or emails. i was under the impression that you should only send one email declaring your intent on ranking that should be to your number 1 program. but i've heard from many others that they plan on sending the "number 1" email and a few "highly ranked" emails. i wanted to get everyone's thought on what the best approach should be. thanks in advance.

Sending a "#1" email is prudent.
"Ranking you highly" emails are interpreted as "not ranking you #1" emails.
Send the former, not the latter.

At least according to the numerous other threads on this subject.

What if we were to send an email that didn't say 'ranking you highly' (aka not #1) but said something about how much we love the program and would love to be there etc?

I feel like I should express my interest somehow. Some of these programs it's been over 3 months since I interviewed thrre

Write short hand written notes to your interviewers. Avoid the "#1" hyperbole, instead talk about about why you think you're a good/perfect fit for the program and *use specifics*. Reference a discussion you had in the interview. Send the letters to the program coordinator to distribute. Send an additional short email to the program director with why you thought the interview day went well.

A real note talking about why you're a good fit has the potential to be effective. It will take a little more work, but that's part of the reason why it has a chance of being effective. Personal reasons are fair game (family, hometown). If you can't think of a good reason why you'd be a great fit with specifics... maybe you should rethink the position. Don't be afraid to express your enthusiasm (it won't be taken the wrong way) and don't be a fake, and you should be ok.

sounds good!

i had another question. say you get an email from a program stating that they plan on ranking you high. but you don't plan on doing the same. how would to reply to the email? thanks in advance again!
