I know it's that time of the year again. As of now, I am interested in PP, and I am married. Having a difficult time ranking NYU, Wake, MUSC, UF Gainesville and UM/Jackson. I felt all 5 had great faculty/residents. Looking to hopefully work in the Southeast in the future, but NYU has very nice resources, and the possibility of Academia is still there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

NYU is the best of all programs you mentioned and living in NYC can be fun. If you don't have NYC and you can afford it, chose NYU.

NYU or Wake at top. I've found a subtle North-South parochialism (in both academics and pp), so if it's critical to go back to the Southeast, favor Wake. If it's not essential, I'd just go with your gut.

Just so we're clear, anything south of northern Virginia is the South. Either carries weight in Florida, I'd imagine.

If you want to be in the southeast in PP I would choose Wake. MUSC and NYU do have great locations. I think academically NYU and Wake probably have the strongest reputations. UF-Gainesville is also a great program but it is more regional.

Did an externship at UF Gainesville, very strong program. You can't go wrong with UM Jackson either. Great location, one of the larger programs in FL (11/yr), great pathology at Jackson, a public hospital and trauma center, great PD and residents.

You have a "good" dilemma.

If you feel like you cannot pass up NYU, you could always go there for residency then get a fellowship down south at Duke or Emory or any of the other really good programs or in an area that you want to live. Personally, I could not live in New York and would much rather live in Charleston.

If living in the southeast is your ultimate goal, it is better to do your residency there. You will make the right connections when it comes to getting hired. Even residents from more prestigious programs in other regions can have a harder time breaking back into a different geographic region.

If working in academics is your goal, then probably NYU has the strongest academic reputation.

Thank you guys for the responses. I see a common point in all of them, and I am leaning more in favor of location/ PP possibilities in Southeast.
