Dear SDN friends,

I think it might be helpful if current/past radiology residents would be willing to post legitimate job offers that they have received. It would be helpful to include information such as: salary, call schedule, hours per week, city population, weeks vacation, bonus, type of practice (interventional vs. diagnostic), years to partner, etc.

Thank you for reading and hopefully contributing.

Just to let you know...

The kind of explicit information you have asked for is usually kept on the down-low. Those in-the-know don't usually make such info public. You might have an equal chance of asking a guy for a naked picture of his wife and actually getting it.

😀

Never hurts to ask though, right?

By the way, do you have a digital camera? 😉

This type of information is kept on the down-low when one is disussing such issues in person, but not in an ANONYMOUS FORUM. Maybe, just maybe that's the reason forums like this were created.

I guess it's true when they say some of the most intelligent people are truly devoid of common sense.

Exactly. I don't know you from Adam, so show why don't you show us nude pics of your woman?

Listen, Da-

Grow up, son....
There are many reasons this information isn't public. For the same reasons it will cost you $300-500 for and official salary survey with break down of gross bills, expenses and size of practices from an organization like MGMA.
If you really are serious about wanting to become a radiologist, or any other highly compensated specialist, its in your best interest to keep this info to yourself.

Ask on Auntminnie and you'll hear the same.

Considering he wasn't requesting a break down of gross bills, expenses and the size of practices, your point is mute. This is an anonymous forum in which people can exchange information. It is not asking too much for people to say they saw starting salaries around a certain range. You are not going to be able to trace someone's identity based on their compensation package. Big Frank wasn't asking for your social security and credit card numbers. Divulging salary is not the same as a retinal scan. Here is my prescription for you,

Get a girlfrend
Get laid
Get drunk

Just attempt this once, that's all I ask. Trust me, you won't act like a little girl next time someone requests basic information. I'm personally not interested in this information, but I just didn't appreciate your snide response to a very legitimate question. BigFrank is one of the most helpful people on this forum. You could learn from him.

Good Luck to you

Is the point mute or moot?

No my friend, the reason why posting salaries is not good for the field is because if people are walking around knowing how much radiologists are making they make think it's too much. the NY Times has quoted Auntminnie.com forums before.

The great daelroy once again imparts his wisdom on whomever gets in his way. Got any more mute points to make?

Excellent point. I certainly wouldn't put it past the NY Times to use anonymous forums as "an inside source in the field of radiology"

It is such a prestigious paper, with such an excellent track record as of late! 😉

P.S. I posted this question to the seemingly continuous stream of posters stating that the average salary for radiology is approximately 250K and the hours worked per week are 60. I'm just getting mixed signals from the salary surveys, heresay, and some SDN posters.

The best way to find out what is really going on in the job market is to talk with a radiologist in person, I've spoken with several and they were very open and helpful. A public forum is a bad place to discuss such things, especially for a field like radiology where compensation is thought to be out of control by many.

So I draw from the above comments that radiology salaries are astronomical at this time and, as I previously stated, the salary surveys are clearly misrepresenting the truth. I was "shot down" for suggesting this earlier, but the bizarre "Big Brother" attitude that I'm getting here confirms my earlier suspicions.

Funny how anesthesiology, derm, IM, Ophtho, etc. are all happy to discuss starting salaries and hours worked per week at this time.

Thanks!

Actually, I heard that radiology program directors are the the best source for this type of information. So next year on your interviews, be sure to ask about salaries and time off.

Yeah, your're right about the NY Times. Fox news is so much more objective and reliable. That's why they did so well in court against Al O'Franken.

I'm not taking sides or anything, but I don't see the big deal in stating non-specific salary/benefits info in this forum. Are people afraid that if others find out how much radiologists make, then some group will come along and try to take that away?

In my opinion, the groups who pose a threat to physician compensation, such as insuarance companies or the government, know how much radiologists make, or at the very least, have a pretty damn good idea. The general public's knowledge of physician compensation poses no threat.

Also, I'm sure that any group that may pose a threat to a radiologist's salary won't come to some public forum for this kind of info where you here contradicting stories of a radiologist's lifestyle. They'd get it from more official sources such as recruiting firms that generate these kinds of reports based on what packages their recruits get.

I guess my point is keeping this info for those who know the secret hand shake or part of some underworld brotherhood/sisterhood won't preserve the current levels of compensation. As I said, the groups that do pose a threat already have a good idea of how much physicians make by specialty.

just my opinion 🙂

Al O'Franken? Really?

P.S. Good luck in the match, really. I know it must be very stressful as an osteopathic applicant.

Your junior-high 'get laid' is a notch up from an elemenatary school 'yo-momma'. Grow up, man. Your points are 'mute' to me until you can offer intelligent discourse.

Bigfrank-
try googling 'physician salaries'. www.merrittandhawkins.com has some job listings. They come close to breaking it down for you.

I can't tell you what Radiologists make or are offered, because I'm not looking for a job anytime soon. In general, there is a wide variation in starting salaries. You wanna work in a big city? You'll make less to start and have a longer partnership track. Some groups have 'buy-in' capital investment requirements. Other underserved areas will offer a monthly stipend during residency or help you pay off your loans to entice you.

Vacation time is a function the size of the group and whether or not the senior partners want to put the call burden on junior partners. Salaries also vary by region with the HMO-dominated west coast, and over-saturated East coast paying less.

Bottom line-- there is a huge variation in starting salaries and vacation time. Even so, there is no telling what the job market will be like when you or I finish.
Good luck

Jesus, BigFrank, you can really be a jerk, can't you? I know you're a little thin-skinned, but just relax a little.

P.S. I made this just for you! I was thinking you could add to your tagline.

Nice try, fiscal discipline...
Nice try, Social Security...
Nice try, scientific consensus...
Nice try, responsible foreign policy...
Nice try, Geneva Convention...
Nice try, environmental stewardship...
Nice try, church-state separation...
You lose.

Dear Will, All the emotion, I LIKE it! Better luck in '08 w/ Hillary -- you're going to need it.

How long did it take you to come up with your "witty"/esoteric retort to my old tagline? 🙄

I remember the good old days when Bigfrank was posting hourly on the usmle thread and complimenting everyone while fending off detractors about his score. He posted something along the lines about how he was seriously considering primary care blah blah blah. Now he has latched on to radiology which is ok. He will match in whatever he wants to, the stats seem to be there. However, do us all a favor BF and stop with the egotistical witty replies to everyone who challenges you. You seem to be starting most of the crap you take the time to answer to everyday. This is a pretty quality site, the forum is legit when comparing to others. It says a lot about you when you post the quote

My favorite quote from a patient thus far...
(Picture an obese, lazy, and manipulating female during her son's pediatric appointment...)

"...Oh, I know. I have had a rough go of it lately. My back is sooooo bad, My knees have both been replaced. I'm tooootally disabled."

Everyone knows there are some patients out there who give us trouble but "picture and obese lazy and manipulating female......c'mon give it a break, obviously you could be right about this lady but give her some respect.

My favorite quote from a forum poster so far...
(picture an obese, egotistical, pompous male sitting in front of his computer long enough to get decubs in front of his framed board score)
"What, you want me to take a picture of my score, I'll do it!"

Ugh, I think I threw up in my mouth when I saw you actually did it.

Nice summary of me. thanks for that. 😀

P.S. Would it make you feel any better if I told you that the 267 score report was from my buddy?

Maybe I'm missing something, but just check out any physician recruiting page, and you'll get a good idea of where your particular discipline stands. I'm FM bound, I'll probably start around 140K with another 20-40k bonus potential. (There's a FL FM job starting at 300K!!! skews the results. ha!) Thats after perusing a number ads. Rads usually start 250K (although geography seems to have more impact than other disciplines) But interventional starts at 400-450 + bonus w/ short partnership track, etc.... It's not perfect, but just check out the job ads, you'll get a pretty good idea of what the market is doing. .02$ 😀

You are just like a used car salesman. You are using ad hominem attacks, but you are disguising it with an "erudite" tone to sound like you are above this type of discussion. What happened to the naked wife analogy you were spewing just a few posts ago? Needless to say, you were being a jerk and I called you on it. If you would have provided your response above to Big Frank's first post, none of this would have been necessary.

What exactly are you arguing? Are you implying that by placing salary information on a public forum, managed care and insurance companies are going to lower their reimbursement to radiologists? Do you really think these entities don't already know what radiologists earn? Trust me, insurance companies are not coming to SDN to gather salary information. They already know what radiologists earn because they have departments that pay to research this. Now if you want to get into an intelligent discussion, try disputing this point, otherwise, your initial post has no meaning.

Wow, you have to love a cheap shot from a guy who posted a thread asking which fields offer the best lifestyle just a few months ago. We all know that topic that has never been discussed before. I'm certain it would never show up in a search.

Yes, you certainly exude wisdom. Do you have any other pearls to offer?

The people you are referring to are insurance companies and they already know how much radiologists earn. And these insurance companies are not spending all day reading SDN and AuntMinnie. And if you believe that then you should have lied and said you received a starting salary for 150K. I'm sure, most insurance companies would believe that. 👍

And do you really think a writer for the NY Times can't directly call someone from one of the top physician search firms whenever this person wants physician salary information? There is a reason the NY Times routinely quotes the most prestigious executive search firm, Challenger, Gray and Christmas, any time they need information about job losses and average salaries. Most firms would gladly allow the NY Times to quote them for the free publicity.

Daelroy, you need to read my original post carefully. I simply stated why it was not likely that people discuss would this information on a public forum, anonymous or not.

You will see that so far there have been no takers to Bigfrank's request for explicit numbers.

I also stated that if you asked for the same thing on Auntminnie.com you would likely get the same response. If this is so hard for you to accept, why don't you try it yourself?

To this you responded with ad hominem attacks against me, as if I had any control over whether people posted this information or not.

Daelroy, no matter what YOU think about what effect of anonmity should have on salary disclosures, it won't change the fact that MOST PEOPLE are not likely to post this information, not on this board, auntminnie.com or any other board.

Yes, its true, this is an anonymous forum.
No, people still don't want to talk about it openly.

As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing further to discuss. Please refrain from further ad hominem attacks.

Does daelroy just love to see how many posts he can put up? You sound a little defensive bud. Insecure?

You will see that so far there have been no takers to Bigfrank's request for explicit numbers.

That doesn't mean anything. Most of us are in the same situation. We are seeking this information. Most of us are medical students or residents. There are not very many practicing radiologists reading this forum because they really have no need for this forum any longer.

I also stated that if you asked for the same thing on Auntminnie.com you would likely get the same response. If this is so hard for you to accept, why don't you try it yourself?

I don't doubt the members on Aunt Minnie refuse to provide this information. It doesn't change the fact that some people are extremely paranoid or petty about revealing basic salary information. I'm a reasonable person. I'm not asking someone to state where he or she works and what their current salary is. But I don't think it is asking a lot to say they saw offers typically within a certain range. I understand that some people pay a lot of money for this type of information. But the type of information they are requesting is far more in depth than what Frank was seeking. I don't think it's a big deal for someone to state offers they had seen. People in the FP and IM forums have no problem revealing this information but when it comes to radiology, it's all about Big Brother .

As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing further to discuss. Please refrain from further ad hominem attacks.

Agreed and likewise be a little more helpful next time someone has a genuine request.

Rudy, why don't you post a thread inquiring about a radiologists' lifestyle and income again. Show the forum how insightful and creative your threads are And feel free to respond with another one of your one-liners because we know that "secure" people like yourself are great with the one-liners.

Part of the reluctance of most posters to give this information stems from the fact that many non-radiologist physicians see radiologists as overpaid. We prefer not to add fuel to the fire. Just check out posts by Fantasy Sports elsewhere in this forum.

Rest assured that you will be well compensated as a radiologist, whether it be 200K or 600K. Odds are if its the latter, you will be working your ass off in the middle of nowhere.

If you guys want some answers about vacations, salaries, perks, lifestyle issues, I suggest heading down to your radiology dept and talking to some of the residents/attendings in person. I'm sure you will be well-received for your enthusiastic inquiry about the field. Who knows, you might get a great LOR? :meanie:

You write this as if you're being tongue-in-cheek. I've been astonished how kind, interested, and helpful my radiology attendings, program director, and chair have been. It feels nice to be recruited. 😛

Leave Mr. Guliani alone. The idea that he mispelled the mayor's name when creating his username is preposterous. Look around, it's obvious everyone is using their true first and last name. You guys act like this is some anonymous message board or something.

So you're telling me how to spell my own name novicheck?

Your name just happens to be "similar" to that of the mayor's. Pretty believable considering nearly everyone here prefers to conceal their identity. I guess you are just different.

Im familiar with the rads market solely because my headhunter was combined path/rads and I "came into" lists of salaried positions. I was floored, trust me its insane. I would say the low range was 250 and the high range was 350K starting, partnership track, 8 weeks of vaca, not sure about call. This was California. That is non-interventional, purely diagnostic, of course interventional is more, not sure how much tho.

Needless to say from a purely monetary standpoint, I choose poorly as med student.....

How does this compare to average pathology starting gigs in the same area for people without specialized training like cytology or dermpath? I thought path was supposed to be one of your above average paying specialities. How do they compare?

But to all the others who doubted me about 800,000 as a partner in So Cal, see....?

A partnership track does not = 800,000. Try between 350-500K

daelroy said:

Partnership position in a good rads groups is well over 700K. Trust me.

There are 4-5 big groups that dominate pathology in California, those partners make 650K with 3 months of vaca a year so I know rads is more.

The highest job offer coming right out of fellowship Ive heard in ANY field was in int rads, starting was 500K, 10 weeks vacation. Of course that is from a person who graduated top of the class at a top medical school went to the top int rads program and was chief resident, likely not you. But he is only 31.

The highest for path starting Ive heard of was 290K/8 weeks of vaca, so considerably less.

But the range is immense, academic jobs pay 130-150K regardless of your speciality (most cases). I interviewed for positions that paid roughly the same but one had 3 weeks of vacation, the other had 6 months, why? I have no idea.

Trust me, there are a TON of rads groups in California so it really depends on which ones you join. The vast majority of them do no pay anywhere close to the 700-800K range in Cali. Most offer roughly 200K more than the starting salary and parternship tracks are rather short ~1-2 years.

No point in quibbling over the numbers, regardless if you are a rads resident and close to finishing it time to check out the Bentley Arnage model you want...because your stinkin rich regardless.

You have to be carefull about anything a headhunter tells you. They are salesmen like brokers and car dealers. They are experts in telling people what they want to hear.
