I'm a canadian but don't want to stay in Canada (too cold, except BC but don't want to take a year of biochem).

I have decent but not stellar stats (36R/3.8 GPA) and average ECs (lots of research, 1 pub on the way, 100ish hrs of clinical, and misc. art, music, social work type stuff)

I was pretty unprepared for this cycle (my school doesn't really have a pre-med advisor and my undergrad advisor knew very little about med school) (insert more excuses here) applied late, so i'm not getting much love, not hoping for much... but i'm determined to get everything in early as possible and beef up my shadowing + clinical hours for next year (which i think i'm lacking most in.. a lot of my ECs are art-related or very social-work-y things with kids with behavioral problems).

so i have a few questions:
1. what else can i do to make my application better in general?
2. what are some mid-tier and low-tier schools i would be competitive at in the states as an international student?

1. Leadership and Teaching are other areas to list an activity for. Nonmedical community service is also viewed very well, which you may have covered with your work with children if it isn't paid.

2. Your stats are competitive wherever you want to apply that will take international applicants. You can look for lists that other internationals are using (maybe use Search in the 'What Are My Chances Forum', or get an MSAR which has lots of other great information, like prereqisites for each school, number of internations interviewed/accepted, median acceptee stats, etc.

Try to find out which of the private schools in the US have taken Canadians in the past few years. Your numbers look O.K. Try to beef up the clinical volunteering hours, and get your application in next year at the earliest possible month (like July/august?).

I thought for most private schools residency was not a factor in acceptance???

Private schools in the states won't care where you are from. They will care about your ability to pay as you won't be eligible for US financial aid.

From a stats standpoint, you would be a good candidate at any school.
Just apply early. Like the first day.
There is no excuse for being a late applicant. That is the kiss of death for many people.

How many top/mid/lower tier schools would you recommend that I apply to? I know more the better but I'm going to be working a fairly low-pay research job next year while paying off some student loans so I'll have a pretty limited budget.
