I am thinking about pursuing derm. I just figured this out. I am only a third year so I have some time, but does anyone know how I can improve my chances of matching at a place that I want? I know its very competitive so should I have published research? Lots of derm electives? LORs? Anyone have any advice on what a solid candidate should have (besides the numbers, because I have those)?

Derm research with Pubs is good. Get to know your home derm department. Do an away or two 4th year. Practice being a pleasurable person to work with if your not already. Get into the field and develop a general interest and your personal interests (research helps with this).

It's a small field and some of it is who you know, not always what you know. Definitely do a derm elective or two, but I don't think you have to go crazy. Remember that 4th year is one of the last chances you'll have to learn about fields outside of your chosen career.

Good luck and have fun.

Personally, I hope to match. If it's where I want, then great...but the general sentiment is 'hope to match'. heh.
