As I am looking at neurology residencies to apply to next year. I have a fairly strong research background which of late has been more clinical research based (started off in basic science). I know of several programs which allow for up to 6 months of research during residency, some of which allow you to take it as a block of time between PGY-3 and PGY-4. Those interest me as I would prefer a solid block of time rather than only being able to take 1 month off every 4-5 months due to rotation schedule.

Despite that, I am more interested in programs which provide a formal training program to a resident who wants to go into academia. While it is easy to see which programs might receive the must NIH/NINDS funding, that only tells half the story as it still doesn't let me know if they will provide the proper training that I would like to prepare myself for eventually getting an early career/K-award. What is the easiest way of going about this?

One issue that I have thought of is that I plan on doing a fellowship after residency. So maybe these questions would be better fit for that? Any thoughts from those of you already in faculty positions? Fencer, are you still active? Maybe you would have some good advice/points?

Hmmm BIDMC seems to be really strong in mentoring and has access to research through everything going on at HMS and the Longwood medical area.

Also they have a a specific research track known as the Harvard Medical School Neurology Resident Research Education Program providing an opportunity for residents to participate for 9 to 24 months in an intensive, mentored, research educational experience during the third year of residency and subsequent fellowship years.
