Question for program directors...I noticed that there are programs that have fewer filled positions than the number of positions than which are accredited to have, and historically they operate at that lower level of positions. Is this most likely because of funding issues? How much funding does it take to fund a residency slot per year on average? What are the sources for funding residency positions?

I'm not a residency director, but I can tell you that most allopathic positions are funded by CMS. Some are funded by the institution above what CMS provides. Some Osteo spots are privately funded.

Not a residency program director either, but the discrepancy between the number of accredited positions allowed by the RRC which I believe can be seen on the ACGME website and the actual number of residents is based on funding. Some big wig institutions are rolling in money and can fund spots like candy, even taking those who've completed a prior residency. Other institutions have to follow the rules completely and can't afford to lose any money. Usually the funding is thru Medicare but it can also be thru the VA, Big Pharma, etc.
