I am interested in pursuing an occupational medicine residency and then following that up with an MBA. is there a demand for doctors with this type of training? will it be hard for me to get a job going this route? i would appreciate any advice anyone could offer if anyone knows anyone who has gone this route previously.

also, is it hard to get an occupational medicine residency? do u need to complete a residency first before applying for an occupational medicine residency? or can you just complete an intern year and then apply?

thanks for the advice.

occupational residency is a residency all by itself. It's not competetive to get into, you don't need an MBA, you would be better off with an MPH (which many residency programs offer as part of their program, so you don't have to get one). You should try to work with an occupational physician before applying to be one to make sure that you learn more about it and see if you really like it though. There is a strong job market for occupational physicians since regular physicians stink at occupational issues (eg they let everyone who c/o a minor ache stay home and apply for workman's comp).

thanks for the replies guys. one more question.... is preventative medicine/occ med a competetive/hard residency to get into?

are there places that offer 4th year electives in preventative/occ medicine?

No. I'm sure there are places that offer electives. Your best bet would be to find out which programs offer the residency and ask them if there are externships available to 4th year medical students. If you just want exposure to the field, you wouldn't necessarily have to rotate at a program that offers the residency. For instance, students that rotate at our program may choose to work in the Occ Med clinic.
