Is anyone applying for a post-bac here? I was wondering who dental/med schools look upon this program as it is a community college. By the way, is it a gpa-booster or science-prereq post0bac?

Its more or less a diy postbac, for science pre-reqs. Note that some schools (and most advisors) will look disfavorably on classes from a community college, but at SMC (and most if not all CC's in California) the classes are directly transferable as undergraduate classes in the UC system, so discrimination against them would be irrational (it may still happen, though).

Don't worry! Nearly every CC in CA is set up to have articulation agreements for transferring credits to the CalState and UCs. The original legislators probably foresaw the burgeoning population and therefore established CCs as the first line of defense for lower division education.

Don't know if this is worth anything to anyone, but coming from the East Coast I too had initially worried about the acceptability of CA CC credits. But I've manage to coax my pretentious alter ego to go with the CCs and save some money. 😀

I had misgivings about taking at SMC (or any other CC for that matter.) Primarily, I'm concerned with how adcoms view CC pre-reqs. Briqhowse is the only person of know of who did their pre-reqs CC, and was accepted to med school....good luck.

Did anyone else have as much trouble as I did with SMC this fall? Bio 21 was closed light years before I could enroll!

I know this is somewhat off-topic, but SMC is HORRIBLE about transcripts! When you get ready to have them sent, you'll have to really follow up with them. They have some new-fangled whiz-bang system that's so sophisticated, they seem to have trouble doing the simple, basic, mailed in requests for AMCAS.

Just FYI. My application has been delayed unnecessarily for 3 weeks due to their incompetence.

Argh!

Is this seriously true? I did SMC for 3 years about 5 years ago, then went to undergrad, got a degree, have been working a couple years now and am toying with doing postbac premed. I can't imagine SMC would count--wouldn't a calstate be better (still DIY I imagine)?
I'm brand spanking new to this--just starting to look into it. Where are good (cheap preferably) programs in LA? I know USC has one, but I imagine that's a hefty cost.
